I notice some of our foreign posters seem to have a liking for Benny Hill?? I find him really unfunny!!! Oh well maybe it translates well overseas, did anyone see that Simpsons episode where JK Rowling says 'Americans can't understand the subtlety and irony of British comedy' and then it turns into a Benny Hill sketch with Homer chasing Marge around? Now theres a clash of the Titans: British vs US comedy... Bill Hicks or Bill Bailey? The Office or Seinfeld? Monty Python or Fraser? Admittedly the yanks probly have the superweapon in the form of The Simpsons....

The Office got Americanized, hate to tell ya.  The Simpsons is a superweapon because no show since All in the Family has taken so many pot shots at US society and politics, and there are no physical limitations, so foreign critics of the US probably have to watch The Simpsons for material.

I've seen The Office: An American workplace, and didn't think it was so bad. As for the Simpsons, yeah they take potshots at America, but then look at characters like Groundskeeper Willie or Apu!

As for the British accent, well, if it is Pierce Brosnan or Alec Guiness, yes, that is cool.  Piker Cockney is entertaining but I don't think it comes off as sexy.

Hey!! I have a cockney (well west London estuary) accent, and I'm sexy as they come, LOL!!! I think you mean Pikey rather than piker.Pikey is  used as a derogatory term for any stupid or poor people (like Chav), but really refers to an Irish traveller. They usually speak in a really strong Irish accent, see Brad Pitt in Snatch for a good impression.

Really, the main advantage of English accent is in swearing, certain swearwords only sound really nasty in English accents
Am I allowed to put them here?

1)Putting weight behind scrapping the CAP.
2)English Literature.
3)Policing the world for hundreds of years
4)Political Philosophy
5)Physics
6)Carbon Fibre
7)Cambridge United Football Club
8)Law
9)Molecular Genetics
10)The World Wide Web.
Britain is an awesome nation, but I believe Al Gore owns the exclusive rights to The World Wide Web. As far as policing the worl for hundreds of years...I think that policy has come to an end. With all the pansies in your Parliament (as with our Congress), I don't think Britain will get involved in any other conflicts in the next few years (or decades).

There are lots of reasons to be proud to be British.  Here are my reasonalbly light hearted  reasons why I am proud to be British.

1) Iron Maiden (As far as io am concerned the greatest Metal Band EVER!!!!!!)
2) The Union Jack, In my opinion the coolest looking Flag of any Nation.  (However I understand that there may not be universal agreement on this )
3) The Royal Navy (The reason Britannia Ruled the Waves for so long through History)  In fact all our armed forces, they always make us proud.
4) Fawlty Towers, Monty Python etc... That unique brand of British Humour.  Currently I think Little Britain is the funniest show I have ever seen.  Im not sure how it would be recieved here in the US though!!!!!
5) The whole "Stiff Upper Lip" Never Complain, Make do attitude that Brits are renouned for.
6) My Northern Irish accent, It has been of great benefit to me her in the US,  the ladies love it!!!!!!!!
7) The Royal Family, for all their flaws I honestly believe they are something to be proud of.
8) British Engineers, we are lucky to have some of the best Engineers on the planet, its just sad that the engineering profession in the UK doesnt get the respect it desreves.
9) Our long and cherished History, its true we have our less than honourable moments, but I believe we have been the "Good Guys" a lot more often than the "Bad Guys" but I also understand that is a matter of perspective.  So I wont take it too hard if people disagree with that.
10) Have I mentioned Iron Maiden,......The greates Band EVER!!!!!!!

Well I don't like British metal bands-but then I don't like metal. The Union Jack is a good flag. Monty Python can be outrageously funny,"Brave Sir Robin ran away..." but is to unsubtle for my taste and I prefer the "gentle irony" tradition.
I love the stiff upper lip thing, "I say, it'll be fifteen minutes before Jerry arrives-we have just enough time for a spot of tea".
I love, "old-school" dialect and sometimes use it by habit.
Britain's armed forces.
Britain's immense strategic talent-German's and Frenchmen were only tacticians which is why they ultimatly failed.
Deliberate Anachronism-few countries manage to make "heritage" work as well as Britain.
British history is if not always honorable, hardly more dishonorable then that of others.
The Common Law. Which is something my country has much to be grateful for.
A good combination of respect for authority and tradition, with respect for individual rights-"The King's under the law for it's the law that makes him King". To many societies go overboard one way or another or even both.
The Gentleman's Code. Obviously I don't admire snobbery, but all codes have perversions. However I do admire courtesy, duty, and taking responsibility for the position fortune has placed one in.

I can't say that is what makes me proud of being British-because I am not British. It is some things I admire about Britain.

The Royal Navy was already mentioned.
The Regimental system. The charming military tribalism found in each regiment.
The Empire: Ok I don't approve of everything about it. And the means by which it was obtained is hardly to be approved of-though most of it was aquired from war with other imperialists-actual wanton aggression on the helpless was less common then many realize. And I do approve of how they ruled their empire once they had it in many ways.  By necessity this has to be an ambiguous approval, but it was often good for mankind.
