Subject: How do most Brits feel about the US?
gcw1995    6/8/2005 4:55:35 PM
How do most Brits feel about US government and Americans in general. Here in America, most americans really look at the british as americas only true friend in time of crisis.

I have to say. I am very impressed with UK's military. Brit's that see and hear about are extremly well trained and a great fighting force. I am glad that you are with us(the US). Thanks guys.

Along with the Aussies, the UK and America are Family. Familes disagree and even bicker sometimes, but at the end of the day they are there for each other. (even though I dont think this family has ever recently bickered) I think most of the tension, how ever slight, Is media propaganda. All in all we are more like minded then not. And the US is not doing so bad for a kid brother, sure we have our bad points but we are a work in progress. I do believe though UK would never have anything to fear from the US. What ever many might think of the US, the people here are good of heart. After every thing that as past the US would even come to the aid of France if it needed.

Good questions F22, and you're quite right to press. The problem is that I'm not sure that there are logical answers. Sometimes these things lie at the level of feelings and emotions, which no amount of reasonable argument or explanation can dislodge. It doesn't necessarily have to make any sense. However I shall do my best to try and articulate what I mean: Britain doesn't have anything directly to fear from the US. We do not sit in our homes gibbering with fear by the way - I meant it more as a feeling. We do not have to worry about a foolish war since we simply won't join it (or will only do so in a limited way). We also don't have to fear an insane president (I enjoyed the humour in that sentence by the way, and am tempted to joke back - but I won't). Terrorist retaliation is getting closer to the mark but the UK is, and always was, a target anyway. Perhaps its the fact that after 9/11 the world was a more dangerous place, and the ability of the US to strike with devastating force at whom she chooses, when she chooses to do so adds to that danger. I remember watching the events of that day live with work colleagues, and as terrible as they were, the room went silent when someone wondered aloud as to how you guys were going to retaliate. As a matter of fact the US didn't lash out of course afterwards without doing its best to find those responsible, but we weren't to know that at the time. Does this help? I should emphasise once again that it isn't a major thing (I do not sit at my computer quaking in my slippers for example!) but is perhaps something that operates more at the sub-concious level.

I think I understand now. Your fear wasn't of anything specific. It was more of a general sense of feeling less secure in very uncertain times. We in the US can certainly sympathize with that in the aftermath of 9/11.

Welcome, and thank you for your well reasoned opinions.

Can you provide additional detail about your position regarding WW2 and support of US for UK?

Actually I think we say that mostly to Frenchmen.
