The Western powers are also responsible for the unacceptable position of Japan on history. As a matter of fact, the way we study the history of WWII is not appropriate. In France, the official history which is taught at school mainly reads about the Shoah and the D-day. Horrible events, such as the Nanjing Massacre, are hardly or never mentioned. Therefore, most of French people ignore the atrocities committed by the Japanese army in China. Moreover, the Tokyo trial was truncated since it did not deal with the bacteriological experiments lead by the Japanese on human beings in Manchuria (Heilongjiang province). In fact, these war criminals, like Shiro Ishii, were protected by the US army which was very interested in the results of those experiments. Actually, the way we learn history at school is motivated by elementary anti-communism. Today, we place the emphasis on the US military actions, putting aside the battle of Stalingrad or the Chinese resistance against the Japanese aggressors. The responsibility devolves upon the Western powers to correct the way history is taught and to put Japan under pressure so that it changes its attitude towards China.
