Subject: Ancient Indian Republics
Vritra    1/24/2007 7:12:33 PM
Between 2000 BCE and 400 BCE a number of small republics flourished in India's river valleys - an institution vaguely preserved in Indian villages' 'civilizational memory' as "panchayats". After decades of internal conflicts and/or famines they collapsed to the rapidly growing empire of Ajathashtru of Magadha. Altogether a rather interesting account of Republics in Ancient World.
