Subject: Sherman's southern campagain
dogday    3/5/2006 3:33:57 AM
Does anyone think that N.Forrest could have been effective in making a difference in the outcome of Shermans march through the south? Second question is does anyone know how the union went about defending its rail lines. What was the procedure for keeping enemy troops from causing trouble?

1. Forrest could have disrupted and slowed but not stopped Sherman. The Union Armies of the West were too strong. 2. The Union army dropped off troops to guard the lines. Also, the lines operated under central military control (unloike the Southern run rail lines). Herman Haupt had developed an excellent military rail service. Repair crews were stationed along the line to make repairs as needed.
