Back in 1995, a French judge died under suspicious circumstances in Djibouti. Recently, France ordered several high ranking Djibouti government officials to appear in French courts, basically ignoring that country's sovereignty. Over the weekend, the entire country was up in protests over the affair.

History shows that former colonial powers that continue to treat their former subjects like vassals don't tend to fare well in those countries. It is not certain that the situation there will escalate to this level, but it would be interesting to see what happens if Djibouti decided to oust France -- whose only military base in eastern Africa is in that country -- in favor of some other nation. |
