http://www.kansas.com/101/story/79119.html Air France wants Boeing, Airbus planes Air France-KLM Group, Europe's biggest airline, plans to order Boeing Co. and Airbus SAS planes valued at $7 billion, chief executive Jean-Cyril Spinetta said Thursday. Boeing will get on order for 18 777s worth $4.2 billion at list prices. Airbus will get an order for two additional A380 superjumbo jets, bringing to 12 the number of A380s Air France has on order. Air France will also buy 30 Airbus A320 planes, giving the Airbus order a value of $2.8 billion based on list prices. The orders will be signed at the Paris Air Show in June.

I was trying to figure out why AirFrance would buy the 777. I had never realized that Airbus has a missing link in that class. The largest A340 is still 70+ seats smaller, and its 4 engines are far less efficient than the 777. The A330 competes with the 767.

It appears the 777 is in a class all its own for now.

I was wondering the same thing but now that you have explained it in sheer economic terms - it makes sense for Air France to acquire 777s.
