Subject: Congratulations on the high speed rail run
DropBear    4/4/2007 4:04:56 AM
Saw the impressive run on the news today. Jealous that we don't have anything like that in Oz. Fastest train we have is a 160km/hr narrow guage tilt train in my home state.

Well, it's for sale you can buy it ;)

for long trip (more than, say, 1000 km) plane is a better choice for sure, but a high speed train is easier to take and cheaper.  When distances between important cities are not too important (like in europe) it's the perfect solution.

I saw that california is interested to buy TGV for a SF- LA railroad.

Buy the way, one thing that made a lot of french (including me) laugh : the TGV logo (returned) looks like a very slow snail :

Champagne? Nope.
Gewurtztraminer it will be.
I'm told that the TGV development that reached all regions of France was fully state-funded, except for the easterners that got it last (and it won't be in regular service until 2010!) and had to pay for it with a steep increase of their council taxes!

paris/strasbourg in 2h20 for example, instead of 4h.

I like too , gewurtztraminer, a very good white wine from alsace.

Herc the Merc    It would be great for California   4/4/2007 3:55:01 PM
I think from San Francisco to San Diego via LA. People would really use it as it is as fast as a plane considering boarding and leaving the plane. Plus it would be cheaper. But Schwaznagger has no plans for it in 2008 ballot, he wants private funding. So politics will delay it by at least 4years. Though we could use it now, the highways are too crowded. Cost is $10,billion for 700mile network--no money with California state government.

I believe my source about the taxes. Fact is, the East got it last and needed it the most. It would have been wise, IMO, to connect Paris with the Rhine valley, a European aorta, before serving Aquitaine or the Rhone countries. But hey, I'm not even pretending to be objective here: in the meantime, my Alsatian friends and relatives got used to fly...

This said, the work done and the technologies implemented with these LGV's are simply awesome. This is a good example of what the French can do when they roll up their sleeves and stop complaining!

Well, these are good news indeed. I look forward to my 2:20 Strasbourg-Paris trip next July. Personally, I'm not too enthusiastic about Paris airports...

the french gov is now thrifty...less and less public euro.
the TGV was born in 82 to connect paris to lyon, and several years after , the complete fast speed tracks were built to reach marseille , in the same right line , to the south. Lyon and marseille are second and third french cities. that's an explanation. For bordeaux , the same stuff.
TGV has been probably thought within a franco-french idea of development.
maybe , maybe ? that the french were not in a hurry to build a fast track towards the german border strasbourg...subconsciously !

the development of TGV tracks to all europe is on the way. That will be a good competitor to palnes and  better for environment.
