Is it feasible for a country that is small but yet finds it necessary to have the force projection that a carrier brings to use veritcal landing jets (harrier,f-35b) which will make for a smaller carrier that fits for needs of that country????

Ever consider a mega carrier? I know it's a little different from what was previously discussed but I think it might be useful to have several ultra large carriers that take up permanent residence around the world. A carrier big enough to land bombers! Perhaps a catamaran style carrier. Imagine that!...

Well... I dont kno alot about what tube sailors call "bird farms," but I have to figure it like this... All the Forrestal-Class got decommissined, USS Kennedy being last in that Class; The Nimitz-Class is stiil running, but CVN-76 (USS Reagan), CVN-77 (GHW Bush), and CVN-78 (USS Ford) all have a radical new design.  Beyond these are the CVX program that envisions hv carriers (for strike fighters), medium carriers ( for v/tol aircraft and helicopters) and lgt carriers (for helicopters and transporting Marines).  Lgt carriers would essentially replace LPH's and LHA's in the amphibious groups.  This means that the Nimitz-Class is eventually on its way out in favor of a more diverse selection of carriers with various combat capabilities that exceed what we now know.

Yes.  They require less manpower and are cheaper to operate then modern Super Carriers.  Italy alread has one building and I could see Brazil and South Africa having this requirement to project power in their sphere of influence.

Sure. We call them amphibious assault ships and we have 8.
They carry Harriers and,or hekicopters, depending on the class. And about 2 thouand marines.
We just used one to return the marines to Tripoli for the first time in a couple of centuries.
THe will be replacing the Harriers with the F-35 variants, if the fundung holds. Seems likely now that they just demonstrated their flexibility in Libya. (Again, the f-22 was absent).
