Subject: Slipping Gear Could Ruin Your Day

The US Army's preventive maintenance magazine recently carried the following: 

 

"A slipping gear could let your M203 grenade launcher fire when you least expect it. That would make you quite unpopular in what's left of your unit."

In the Navy many years ago, the expression was, "A boiler explosion could ruin your whole day."

Your remark prodded something. It has been a constant source of wondering to me: We have now for centuries build boilers, and still there is the occational boiler explosion. Steam railway engines never cured the problem entirely.
