I don't generally enjoy these debates but do have a question as to whether or not there is a qualitative difference between British and Australian SAS. I didn't think there was any to speak of but I don't know.

The Frenchman    RE:SAS vs SAS   4/20/2006 10:28:52 AM
For your information -When US DECIDED to go to Afganhistan , US Command was very happy to know that the French clandstine action unit "service action" has been deployed several little teams (turn over) since the end of Afganistan war (while the Afg War the French "service action' worked with CIA to support muslims rebels against russian army) I think a big fault to support muslims rebels against a christian country...Just after the end of the Afg war CIA'operationals teams left Afg, but French command decided to stay on spot with clandestine operationals teams...until now... -US special forces officers did that french top units and clandestine action unit in Indochina and Algeria make a great job while those 2 wars, but France lost these 2 wars like US lost Vietnam and will lose the Irak war...2 COUNTRIES, 2 SIMILARS STORY... -AfTer indochina and then Algeria US Command asked French instructors to train the US SF, France was OK and send several instructors in US SF. Somes US officers said about that" In counter revolutionary war the French trained and learnt everything also they teached you all about the TORTURE...sorry." The most famous French instructor iN US SF WAS "General AUSSARESSE" WHO had serious problems in France about torture in Algeria war and illegal operations in Algeria... -Now in AFGANISTAN the French SF work in the same teams with US SF and now French naval commandos (whole 2 teams of Commando Hubert)deploy with Seals and marine recon in same operationals patrols and mixe combat teams, It is true I am very well informed...I am not a youg man without military background who say..ahahah devgroup are the best in the universe with the xfiles...and who never saw one Seal NCOs on the ground... -Several weeks ago a n important SUBUNIT JOIN SF european (with 200 french commandos of the 1st RPIMa and Naval commandos and US conducted an real and hard operation along the border Pakistan...FIGHTING AND DEADS...It is true my friends...

Grenadier Voltigeur    RE:What Special Forces are the best? Maritime Counter-Terrorism   4/21/2006 8:04:43 AM
France have top Ct units. Everybody knows the GIGN and its reputation of excellence and mastery. The sharing of techniques and knowledges from GIGN inside the French SF and CT units make the french units ones of the best in world in close combat and CTism. The GIGN, as a very polyvalent unit, is trained to conduct maritime CT operations. http://www.specwarnet.com/europe/gign.htm There is also the ECTLO (Counter Terrorism and Hostage Rescue Squad) which is part of the French Commandos Marine and was formerly known as GCMC (Close Combat Group). They are trained along with the GIGN, which are the best :) In French: http://le.cos.free.fr/ecmc.htm

olive greens    About getting caught - mough   4/21/2006 10:12:46 AM
>> agreed, Dick was seeling a myth/book's, he never talk's about the times they were caught much does he? << Is it true that no matter who you are in SAS training, you still get caught by the combined Para-Gurkha detachment during escape/evasion session? (Presumably then to move on to surviving interrogation session etc) If so, I think it would be really cool to have a "hunter-unit" for COIN ops trained and staffed by the Para-Gurkha detachment. "Special Forces" like those are more practical for vast majority of the nations combatting insurgencies (counter-revolutionaries, if you will) than SAS-types (who, upon creation, were supposed to be revolutionaries... though they have admittedly mutated now into an anti-revolutionary force). PS: While we are takling about myths, I found SAS being down-graded to a hunter-role in one of those older James Bond movies {where one SMERSH killer uses live ammo in Sterlings} quite pointed ;-)

(Presumably then to move on to surviving interrogation session etc)<< you have to be caught, no matter what, to pass the RTI , minimum 24 hours, and it's not alway's Para or Ghurkas on hunter force, it can be any readily available unit, the Scot's and the Irish regiments are the worst because they really like to beat up on the paras doing selection ;) >>If so, I think it would be really cool to have a "hunter-unit" for COIN ops trained and staffed by the Para-Gurkha detachment.
