Best special force, in disorder: - British SAS - French Commandos Marines - Navy SEALS - Spetnaz - Israeli Special Forces - Australian SAS These are the more prestigious and experimented SF in the world I think.

given the last couple outings the spetz have had i'm surprised anyone puts them on the top ten list now. granted the school rescue was rather hasty and mistakes are entirely understandable there but the opera house was a set piece operation and the civvy casualties there were impressively large and mostly needless from what i've read.

The group that rescued Beslan school was a russian sort of SWAT, not Spetnaz. At the opera, the Spetz avoided that the terrorists blow out themselves, and that was the priority, but with a certain lack of finesse and control. Sure that GIGN would have done it better, but Spetnaz isn't a CTism force. Their speciality is war operations, and I think that in these case they are terrific.

"The group that rescued Beslan school was a russian sort of SWAT, not Spetnaz." it was Alfa - and thats their job - they are rated better than the Speznatz at HRT as its one of their primary missions. Beslan was a phuque up of the highest order.

The British SBS are the best in my opinion becuase: 1) To become a member of the SBS, you first have to train to be a Royal Marine commando which is a very tough. 2) During training they use live ammunition to make the battlefield real 3) They train all over the world, Jungles, Antartic etc.

BP, firstly, you do not have to be a RM to try for the SBS, since the SBS are part of UKSF, an RAF Loadmaster could try if he wanted. Secondly, the SBS are not the only unit to do live fire exercise, nor are they the only unit to train abroad.

FT_Italy    SURELY the British SAS and SBS, followed maybe by Italian and Israeli special forces   6/9/2005 1:46:16 PM
They all have a great war tradition, a good armament and the needed training and experience (Italy especially on counter-terrorism and international crime fighting, but also in combat operations in the last years). US special forces reflect US Army: super-technology, but bungler soldiers for European standards...more Rambo than Nick Stone (did anyone read Andy McNab's novels?). I did not think Austria had special forces of high level :-)

U.S. Army Delta Force specifically Grey Fox(a unit within 1st SFOD-D) British SAS, and Israeli SF(sayeret Mat'kal and Flotilla 13. Go ahead and add the U.S. Navy's DevGru(formerly Seal Team 6) and British SBS
