What next:   send one's card and ask for satisfaction, reassigned to a regular unit, staff work, you are fired,  or  go to work for Blackwater.

"send one's card and ask for satisfaction" - that is hysterical! I love it.

the afghan report is out on this and it is not good.  the report says the marines fired on civilians at at least 6 sites other than the initian suicide bomb site.  the sites are strung along 10 miles of road.

Are the Taliban and Al Queda ever dressed as anything other than civilians?

the article said the us investigation had been started by ncis and that they were sorting out who the convening authority would be for the courts martial.  if that's the case then someone(s) have pooched it big time.

Dogberry: The problem is that you cannot just shoot at people who dress as civilians who you think might be bad guys. One major problem is that in Afghanistan, lots of civilians walk round carrying small arms, and they will shoot back if you shoot at them (it isn't particularly reasonable to expect them to not shoot back...). The problem may be a Somalia mentality, i.e. assuming everyone with a gun is out to get you, and shooting at them first, which can be very dangerous in Afghanistan, where it is not always an accurate assumption. In some cases, it is best to simply put pedal to the metal, and drive out of the danger zone as fast as humanly possible - if that option does not present itself, then obviously it is reasonable to 'actively' defend yourself (i.e. shooting at anyone who makes themselves a threat, by pointing a gun at you).

It will be very interesting to see what is made of this, i.e. whether the Marines acted in accordance with standing ROEs, and in an appropriate manner (not always the same thing, since the rules of engagement may allow you to open fire, but proper operating procedures may dictate a withdrawal).

I could not agree with you more.  Rushing to judgement is the worse mistake that can be done, unfortunately it already has been done.  I know for a FACT that LtCol. Montanus nor anyone else from the command would never ever say thingns such as "I lost confindance on the MSOC commander" this is just the media playing politics. Everyone, for goodness sake do not listen to all these lies. In time we can find out exactly what happened, and lets pray that the individuals involved come out clean and they can proudly say that they did everything they could to protect their troops in battle while being mindful of civilians who had no play in this.

I wasn't there and I have no idea what actually happened but these quotes come directly from MARSOCs website not the media>>

Q1: Were members of the Marine Special Operations Company officially relieved of their duties?
R1:
Yes. The Company Commander and Senior Enlisted Marine of the MSOC currently deployed in the CENTCOM area were relieved of duty April 3, 2007.

Q2: Who made the decision to relieve them of duty?
R2:
The Commander of the 2d Marine Special Operations Battalion, LtCol. Paul D. Montanus, after extensive consultation with the MARSOC Commander, MGen. Dennis J. Hejlik, made the decision to relieve the MSOC Commander and Senior Enlisted Marine of their duties.

R3:
The Commander of the 2d MSOB lost trust and confidence in the MSOC leadership.
