Subject: SEALS vs. USMC FORCE RECON
colts    4/17/2006 3:42:16 AM
I really want to join the military although I am not sure which brance I want to go to. I want to go behind enemy lines and get "down and dirty" so to speak. I want the most action I can get, and not just recon, I want to shoot, fight, I REALLY want combat. I want HALO jumps, scuba training, I want it all. Which branch would be the best for me. I want the hardest training, best training i can get. P.S. I also heard that navy boot camp and army boot camp is a bunch of bull and for in pussies and do not want to be a part of that. Is the CORE still as bad ass as always?

Be careful of what you ask for, you just might get it.

Let me start off by introducing myself. I served during 92-95 in the regular Army infantry. The regular infantry in the Army is a little different in that only those entering the infantry go through Fort Benning Georgia and have a 15 week basic and AIT (advanced infantry training).  Those entering the Army in a different MOS go through 8 weeks of basic training then they specialize in their MOS such as if they are a mechanic then they will train in that specialty after their eight weeks. The Army infantry basic is more intense than that of those going through other specialties in the Army. I joined the Army because during the time the Internet was not around and I could only research by what friends and family stated about the different branches. Now is obviously a better time because you can do better research. I also joined the Army because those entering the Army are given an incentive of joining only 2 or 3 years if they join a combat arms such as infantry, mortars, explosives demolition etc instead of 4 years like most other branches. I also joined because I didn't know if I was going to like it I wouldn't be in as long. I also joined because I wanted to be young enough to be able to go back to college if I wanted to and not be too old. Hind sight is always is always better. After reading through literature of the Marines recently I liked not that they claim to be the best. I like that their beliefs. They believe in Honor, Courage and Commitment. In the Army we had our own code of conduct but i didn't believe it to be as respected and we didn't focus on beliefs we mostly focused on just fighting and tactics. I believe the Marine Corp is better trained physically than the Army in most incidences but I believe the Army is more technical. I would like to hear others' opinions on this because it is a topic that interests me. If I had to choose again I would have joined the Marines.

Listen I?ve been watching this, and i think that most posts are a joke, and the few training tips I?ve seen are useless. Nowhere id anyone mention the train in the cold wet with 3 hours sleep in56 hours all while having sand in your pants and getting the min contract nutrition. The truth is if you want to be a bad ass EVERY branch has a unit for you. Marine Recon team 1, (probably never heard of that) NCSW, army Green Berets and the Air force PJ (WHO are REALLLL Badasses.

But the truth is I?m thinking none of these programs are for you. I think you should go to community college, and play dungeon and dragons in the café or play socom on play station.

Real Badasses or meat eaters as their called never never never asked the question you just did. No would they call navy or army boot camp for pussies

Out of 53 people in my boot camp platoon at Fort Benning Georgia 28 people graduated . This is done intentionally they only want the ones that will complete the mission and not be an hinderance to everyone else when on a mission. Some in basic get out because they had no idea what military life is like, some get physical injuries, some don't want to be there and some are fubar. Some are gone quickly and some make it up to the end then are failed out.

It's not about whom is the baddest. It's about what you specialize in. The branches are all divided up for a reason. Seals can't hump 30 miles with 90lbs on their back as well as Force Recon. Force Recon can't swim at midnight in frigid temperatures and detonate explosives as well as Seals. Neither of the two are as extensively trained in the medical field, anatomy as the Air Forces PJ's. The Army's SF are seasoned veterans. While the Seals and Force Recon are mostly younger enlisted men the Army's SF are more trained, know more languages, are able to go into an area and blend in a hostile environment and change their identity. Rangers I give a lot of credit to. It is Rangers that are put into some of the most worst hostile scenarios in the world where they are usually out numbered and put into situations that defy the odds as a result they often take high casualties. If the misson calls for a specific extreme climate the Rangers are called in. Above all these units the best is the 1st SFOD aka Delta Force. These are hand selected people from all of the above named units. They are the best of the best they work in correlation with the CIA when on an mission.

I'd also like to add that most movies like to romanticize these units. There is nothing romantic about being deployed in a foreign land and being shot at. There is a difference between the movies and real life. This can be witnessed by going to Walter Reed Medical Center or any Veterans Affairs Hospital and see the realities of war.

shorttime    Good Advice!   1/30/2011 1:48:42 PM
This writer is giving you very good advice.   Recon Marine or SEAL, you will be running and swimming long after you'd rather not.  Good conditioning in these areas of fitness will serve you well in qualification.  However, ultimately, this is about your brain housing group.  We've all  seen the OORAH super-jocks throw in the towel and the little fellas qualify.
I did not read this in a book.  Good luck - no matter your choice of service branch.  It was my privilege serve with the Corps. Yet, the teams certainly have their poop in one watertight group.  Both can use reliable men.  Eat your Wheaties, pay attention and all the best to you.

One piece of advice?  It ain't about you.

The kid is probably 19 or 20 by now. I wonder how he's doing in his chosen branch and job duty. If you get a chance and still follow this message board, I'm sure some would like to know how your training is going.

Well, actually in my younger days I did work with and train with SEALS on a regular basis and YES most of them loved to toot thier on horns.....go check out any workout DVD section or book section at your local store and see how many SEAL books and dvds are out there, done by individual guys about their jaw dropping exploites.....they love to sell the SEAL name.  I'm not knocking their abilities at all....just the attitude.  As I said before just about all Spec Ops training is standardized across all the services, same schools, same qualifications same techniques.  Its just that the SEALS tend to run off at the mouth more than others when they are no better than the next guys, cause we all get the same training.  As far as anything in the water, infiltration, exfiltration, lock-in/lock-out, zodiac and rigid raider ops...all of these were created, tested and pioneered by the Marine Corps.  I promise you, Force Recon Marines spend just as much time in and have just as much experience in the water as SEALS.  Truth be told, most of the techniques used today in special operations were actually pioneered and mastered by British and Iraeli commandos, long before any of the American units thought about it.

Not neccessarily;
HALO: Force Recon, Marine Corps Test Unit 1
Submarine Lock-Out: Amphibious Recon Co.
Deep Insertion CAS: Force Recon, MCTU-1
1st Manual on CQB: Colonel Bruce Meyers founder of Force Recon
Hydrographic Reconnaissance: Harbor Reconnaissance Unit USMC, 1930s while developing Amphibious Assault Doctrine.
1st Helo Raid: 3rd Recon BN Korea 1953
There's more I just can't remember right now.

K.I.M. for those doubting the Amphibious ability of the Recon Marine. As shown on the show, "Surviving the Cut", those Marines weren't wading in the surf, coming out & getting sandy, then getting back in the surf for 6wks.

On Training Day 1 they put on 80lbs rucks & ran 3miles to the beach to conduct an Open Ocean circuit course of 2000m swimming 1000m running for 5 circuits w/their 80lbs ruck, & that was just part of Training Day 1.

Also Force Recon & the SEALs used to deploy together on Amphib Ready Groups up until the late 90s. When they did the Force Recon DAP was designated the lead on all Direct Action missions, the SEALs were the trailing or security element.

Not knocking the SEALs, but those knocking FR need to do some research 1st.
