Subject: SEALS vs. USMC FORCE RECON
colts    4/17/2006 3:42:16 AM
I really want to join the military although I am not sure which brance I want to go to. I want to go behind enemy lines and get "down and dirty" so to speak. I want the most action I can get, and not just recon, I want to shoot, fight, I REALLY want combat. I want HALO jumps, scuba training, I want it all. Which branch would be the best for me. I want the hardest training, best training i can get. P.S. I also heard that navy boot camp and army boot camp is a bunch of bull and for in pussies and do not want to be a part of that. Is the CORE still as bad ass as always?

The SEALs and Recon are for the most part equal.

Really? So Recon will be doing 10 mile Combat swimmer operations and SEALs will be doing holed up in some hidesite for days reporting back to the USMC? Different mission tasks, different missions. Now, on the things like DA and such, they are probably equal. I tend to think the Teams are superior at HALO, but I'm sure that isn't always the case. Recon has an advantage I believe at Long Range Recce. Obviously the SEALs are superior at combat swimming. As far as OPLAT, they are probably equal, although I do think that the Teams have a wider variety of transportation options (due to the fact that they are combat swimmers). H2H is also probably a tossup, but I do really like the SEALs CQD system.

So,  basically:

Combat swimmer: SEAL

Recce: Recon

Others: Tossup.

All these things are variable lad, if a FR unit is doing more DA missions then a given SEAL platoon, ect ect, then the FR team would be considered "better", skill's get used or they get rusty, you can train and train all you want, but unless those skills are employed it's really a mute point,

BTW, you can't really be better at HALO jumping, your either good or dead...

How do you know this? I was on a westpac, with FR and SEALS and they never speak about their ops?
But, I'm not saying your wrong either etc.

How do I know what?....and who's talking about operations, you use your skills or they degrade, it's a universal fact, if a unit is doing a certain activity more then another and at a higher tempo, shear repetion and first hand skill knowlage will make them "better" then a unit that is not...doesn't matter how high speed you are or how cool you think you are.

SCCO, I have read your comments and I agree with you that you were only trying to point out who FAST is and what FAST does. For some reason, everyone interpreted what you said into some kind of dick measuring SOF contest. When it is clearly not what you set out to do. I understand your position when people compare FAST to DEVGRU, US Marines to Royal Marines, and I have seen it done before. If anyone is really dumb enough to see everything in balck and white, than it proves their lack of knowledge about military affairs. Because you don't compare US Marines to Royal Marines and you don't compare FAST to DEVGRU. To do so would not only be in ignorance of each of these units, it brings us to a lower level. I am glad you pointed that out.

I didn't compare DEVGRU to FAST, I said DEVGRU whips FAST's a**, there is a difference (and I realize I was off base, by the way).

Your taking from the MARINES knowledge of themselves and repeating it!It's very illegal...

"Illegal"?....that's a shaky grasp of the law you have there squid

colts if you want action and danger and hand to hand and shooting and halo and haho than join the us navy seals you are alot more elite. when you are in force recon you just are like a scout for the grunts and they get hit in friendly fire because the grunts mistake them for enmy. and if you want to become a naval officer for seals the two best ways to do that is go the the naval acadmey.or just go into the navy and go into officer training and the seal video games don't work get out atleast 3 times daily and do dead hangs and push ups and run and go out for sports to train your body for buds witch is about a year plus sere and sqt

Let me first give a little information about myself....I was a Marine for 4 years where I was a grunt and eventually a Scout/Sniper.  I left the Marine Corps to enlist in the Army. I went Airborne and then onto Special Forces. I am not alone in this journy as may marines have done similar things ( SF, CCT, SEALs, ect.). Everyone here is correct that the odds are stacked against you but ...so what. You must train to be extremely physicaly fit and have a mind set that will allow you to block out pain and discomfort. Being elit literaly means liking to be miserable ALL THE TIME! As for boot camp...This should't even be a consideration as it will have little affect on you if you are prepared to be SF ( or Recon, SEAL,ect..) If not then this alone ill break you and you should have stayed home. As far as who is better......They all train for the same typs of missions and goto the SAME SCHOOLS....When you goto military free fall school all branches wil be there, and all the instructors are fro different branchs as well. When I went to combat diver course the instructors where mostly SEALS. This is the way it is beacause you will be working for SOCOM or JSOC regardless of what branch you are. As for a unit that has the highest operational tempo durring peace or war.... I would go SEAL and try to get in to the Naval Special Warfare Dvelopment Group ( was Known as SEAL team 6 )....or Army 1st SFOD-D ( unofficaly known as DELTA ).... These are the best and are VERY selective.... I'd say you have a 1 in a million chance of getting there... However don't get discouraged. The Army is more supportave of such endevors and would be my first choice. The Navy or Air Force is much quicker since you don't have to be infantry first. The Marine Corps untill recently were not a part of JSOC so some things might have changed....But ALL Marines feel their the best and don't care for spec ops ( or Snipers, ect ). With this additudeits very difficult to even get command permmision to to indocs to try out for Force, or STA. It won't take long and you'll be very unhappy where you're at and you won't be able to do anything about it till its time to EAS ( get out).

Good Luck.

okay here is the deal i was like you 3 months ago wasnt sure where in the military i should go but after i was accepted to odu i talked to a navyal rotc instructor he said that if i were to join the marines and attempt and pass the RF training you are elligible for BUDs and if you can pass the RF you have obviously trained and shown dedication to be a SEAL (plus HALO/HAHO is already done) SEAL training, mentally, should be a piece of cake. As the SEALs say BUDs is 90% mental 10% physical. So basically go with your heart but me smart becom a Marine then a SEAL. Also Army rangers do this too. By the way just so you know pretty much everyone is behind enemy lines now days frontlines died pretty much when the commi guerillas came into play.
SEALs: if u like sneaking up on the enemy and willing to use any element (Sea Air or Land)
RF: is really only got the badass label on their snipers otherwise your basically the SEALs intelligence
Berets: if you wanna know everything there is about war and want to teach it so you can create your army in a foreign land
AFP: if you like the classified title
DF: your classified as well but if you like being a hero hostage situation is the way to go and they are the masters

evile451    Seals vs. USMC force Recon   2/4/2010 3:15:39 PM
Funny how everybody gets into these eated debates about who is better.  A little history lesson, USMC Force Recon, founded in 1942, along with Army Special Forces, same year.  Seals founded 1962, instructors for first BUDS/SEAL school were trained by Marines.  USMC pioneered and were the first to freefall/ HALO jump, Lockout from submerged submarine, establish full time Sniper School, Test and approve Fulton Sky Hook, first to test and begin using Spie rigging(I know i misspelled it) and so on.  The SEALS are the late comers in the special operations community and have learned everything they do from the other services.  Most of the special operations community members go to exactly the same schools, taught on the exact same systems and use the exact same techniques, for basic qualifications.  About the only thing the Seals are better than everyone else at is touting their own horn!  You can tell the true professionals, the silent ones, Force Recon, Delta and the like.

@ Evile,
Quit bashing on the SEALs, there is no way in hell I can sit here and watch you insult men of such a high calibre, it makes me cringe.

It's right there in the SEAL Creed little boy, "I do not advertise the nature of my work, nor seek recognition for my actions. I voluntarily accept the inherent hazards of my profession, placing the welfare and security of others before my own."

Have you ever met a SEAL that sold himself and sought personal glory?
No, and with that attitude, you better hope you don't.

Marcus Lutrell.. No wait Dick Marcinko.  But now that I think about it damn near every SEAL I ever met below the rank of E-6.

As a matter of fact the most Humble, Quiet Professionals you'll ever run across are Army SF.. and this is coming fr/a former Act. Duty Marine.
