Subject: An apology to Braddock
Old Grunt    1/20/2006 3:09:04 PM
I never thought that it would happen but it has. I guess you really do have influence with the Department of Defense, or at least the Department of the Army. Just a few weeks ago you were lamenting that the oportunity for you to be a part of the Special Forces community was just not available and how you would jump at the chance if it became possible. I guess some of your influential friends here at the Pentagon heard you because just a few days later the Army raised the age limit for enlistment to 40 in order to accomodate your wish! You are now eligible to enlist as an 18X!! Man, you must be beside yourself with joy! When do you plan on going down to the recruiting station? I mean, you have the required GT score, experience and skills right? And with all the mentoring that you've gotten from "Green Berets" passing the screening tests should be a breeze for you! After all, the best way to influence the "Green Beret" community is to get assigned to USASOC headquarters and they only pull their staff from the operational community which, of course, you already knew. From there you can move to USSOCOM headquarters and have direct influence across the services. A man of your ability should be able to get assigned to the Pentagon staff after only three or four years of operational time. I wouldn't be surprised if you have already been down to the station! I mean, after all, you have assured us all time and again that you are a man of integrity and that you don't lie. And I know that you wouldn't be so superficial, selfish, and petty as to put the well being of yourself and your family above the welfare of the Nation who so desperately needs you. I would expect a lesser man to try and give some lame excuse for why he wasn't going to take advantage of the fantastic opportunity that he had been given, but not you!! I am so excited for you that you have finally been given your chance to show the world what you are really made of! Please keep us informed of your progress, I'm sure the other posters on this board will join me in congratulating you on receiving which you have so many times stated you wished you could get!

>>I don't mean to be harsh GOP, but a 10 miler in 80 Min is pretty slow. you should be aiming to shave atleast 10 min off of that, and swiming is essential, you'll need to be confident strong and able, there's no point going to BUD's or the FR pipeline if you are not a good swimmer, but that is something you can work on, if you go the FR route, because you'll learn in the Corp or are willing to spend a little time in the Navy before BUD's you can get the hang of swimming well,if theres a pool near where you live, that would be even better, don't try ocean swimming with out learning in a pool, it can be tricky ,, the 100 situp's, 100 flutter kick's are a good start, but you have to be able to do them untill the DS tell's you stop, there is no point in training to do 100 of something and then being told you have to do 150!, you train to failure, untill you can't physically do any more.....then you do another one ;), but you've hit the nail on the head with this comment "if I have the right attitude?", you either have it or you don't, many a fine tri athelete or marathon runner have tried BUD's, ect, only to be washed out, while you see slightly over weight or guy's you'd never expect to do it, excell, because they want it, so bad, they'd literally die to make it in, you have to ask, your self, if your sitting on a beach at 3AM up to your neck in ice cold water being shouted at just to get in, is this what I want to do, Day in Day out?<< 10 miles in 70 minutes? That seems like a ridiculous dream for me, I can only run 1 mile in 8 minutes :( ...you think it's possible to build up that much in 2-4 years? I understand about training to failure, but is 100 situps and flutters enough in your opinion? (I am currently at 55 situps in 2 minutes and 35 4-count flutter kicks). As far as swimming goes, I am doing SCUBA 'training' or school (?) in about 2 weeks from some family friends...so maybe they can give me some pointers while I am there (or maybe not). Also, I mean't USSOCOM, not USASOC. It is really not all that big of an issue right now, I am enjoying my life and as long as I am doing some PT/calisthenics and some cardio, then I am not all that worried about it. I just want to get some clear goals and a stable routine so I can build up. I am looking into the Navy Cadet program which is in my area, it may give me a small taste of Navy life (it is listed on the SEAL challenge website as a SEAL type of 'thing' for teenagers, but I think it is more along the lines of regular Navy...I will find out more)

Got my Large Alice Pack (with a kidney strap, I might add :) in today in OD Green (I guess). All in all it looks like a good pack. Comfortable and large. Better than I expected (for $50). Will use it often for weighted pushups/chinups/dips and my Dad and I plan on hiking some of the AT this year, so sounds fun. Now I just have to get my boots and fatigues. I have a budget of $200, while my Dad is going to be spending $2 grand. We'll see if that extra dough does him any good on the trail :)

Braddock, How's your SF enlistment process going? It's been four weeks. "It is the doer of deeds who actually counts in the battle for life, and not the man who looks on and says how the fight ought to be fought, without himself sharing the stress and the danger." T.R.

Come on Braddock, you have now had 4 weeks to get things in order, etc. I plan on joining the Navy under the SEAL challenge in a few years, this can be setup in 1 day.

Old Grunt At 37, I am too old to be chasing dreams. I am living them. If it happens, fine. If not, that is fine as well. I have a diverse skill set from which I can satisfy my natural inclinations to be ever the best in multiple disciplines.

Old Grunt At 37, I am too old to be chasing dreams. I am living them. If it happens, fine. If not, that is fine as well. I have a diverse skill set from which I can satisfy my natural inclinations to be ever the best in multiple disciplines. Cop out. Lack of motivation and initiative is a recipe for failure in any endeavor. If this is the attitude you take towards joining SF, then you certainly don't have the mettle to meet the challenge of SFAS/SFQC. Of course, I'm sure that SF uses simple hurdles like these to begin the process of separating the wheat from the chaff . . .
