Saw this and wondered how serious this might be? http://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/national/interest-in-british-ships-20110118-19vd0.html Curious.

DB you where on the money about getting a Bay class as it has finally been announced that we are currently in serious discussions with the UK about the purchase or lease of the Largs Bay. The following links are from a press conference with MINDEF yesterday.

The word on the street is that Manoora is beyond economical repair and the Poms are offering Largs at an ridiculously low price. So Manoora will pay off and provide the crew for RFA Largs Bay A.K.A HMAS Jervis Bay III.

Tobruk will follow before Canberra commissions and then Kanimbla will go before Adelaide comes on line (She stays the longest because Manoora will become a Spare Parts Hulk).

Isn't it a bit odd to lease naval vessels (and other military hardware for that matter)?

Would have thought the UK would want to sell it outright. Interesting to see what comes of this.

Curious.

I am hoping for a sale, a lease wouldn't be ideal IMO. As a Bay class is pretty much exactly what we need to replace the Tobruk and what was stated in the white paper.

there can be sustainment advantages if you lease.

I'm not sure why they just don't flog it off, in 5-10 years time they will have a significant manning problem as they've got stacks of people (RN and RAF) wanting to jump ship and transfer to Oz.

RAAF is no longer looking at fast jet drivers from ex Commonwealth as they are at establishment.  RAN however does have resourcing issues which may well be solved by the number of canuck and RN submariners wanting to shift over.

if govt listens to some of the reasons as to why they buggered up subs we could well kiss goodbye to the problem of manning  - and the crewing for 13 subs will go away - and thats highly possible

Yes ^^

I was under the impression that a Bay class was almost the perfect thing we were looking for in a strategic sealift ship.

you can commit more of the complex support to the sponsor nation rather than invest here - and if we're not keeping them it makes no sense to spend valuable dollars on infrastructure and capability which are platform specific.  in the shornet case we have a compliant and supportive sponsor (USN).  there are only minor changes to the shornets to fit into RAAF reqs, so its not as if there is a compelling need.  its working to our advantage on the exchange rate as well..  even if the dollar goes back the money was predicated on other rates and we've already saved a bucklet load because of it.
