You are welcome to be my guest at Bumbles, one of my favorite Oz breakfast nooks, for breakfast this approaching weekend within reasonable (ten or so) numbers subject to prior arrangement. No, I will not be treating every hot or tot for all of Q-land but it would be swell to meet up with fellow SP posters. I suggest pseudonyms only and no cards exchanged ;>) Drop me a line if interested, I've visited the area before and am likely to revisit again in the years ahead so perhaps someday we shall meet if not this trip. Please leave your SP handle and availability at the email address given above. Take care,Oz. v^2

No probs, I find that most people who advise you to avoid the topic with them are either strongly for or strongly against stricter laws.  That said, my views on the topic tend to p off both sides.

My view, I agree they need to be regulated, but I disagree with legislation that regulates based on appearence rather then function, like portions of the Current legislation does.
I also disagree with things being legal under legislation (by state law), but being blocked from Import without Attorny General Approval (by federal law).

Of course, this doesnt even primarily relate to guns, though they do fit both categories.....

My opinion of firearms is the same for motor vehicles, my issue is and always has been with the individual using / owning / securing, the firearm / car / motorcycle / 4x4 etc etc and not the actual specs of the device in question.  The competence and or mental stability of a person is what dictates the out come not the tool they are using.  A nut bag with a kitchen knife will hurt / kill far more people than a sane, responsible, competent individual with a .308 cal semi auto rifle.

It concerns me that unstable individuals who do not have criminal convictions can obtain firearms licences and high power firearms.  Had our current laws been in place in 1996 Martin Bryant could still have legally applied for a firearms licence and legally owned a variety of high power quick firing firearms (pump action or lever action rifles), infact as he owned a farm he could have held a class C licence and still be able to legally own semi automatic centre fire rifles.

Making it a requirement to pass an annual psychological assessment as well as being an active member of a firearms club, including passing competence assessments on safety etc, in order to hold a firearms licence would flag people like Bryant and do far more to make society safe.

My opinion on driving, especially so called professional drivers is the same, regular testing, screening and peer reviews is a must for any activity that stands to place innocent people at risk.

Sorry for highjacking your thread VV http://www.strategypage.com/CuteSoft_Client/CuteEditor/Images/emembarrassed.gif" alt="" />

No, I don't know his views. Those are just to two biggest topics that I've had bust ups on the US Board though.

I've just returned to the States from a terrific holiday in BrizzyVegas.  Not my first trip there and already I'm planning a revisit, poor poor Oz.  (Trademark clients take me near the glitz, hint.)  Since there were no confirms I used Sat. a.m. for a tune up run and comfortably jogged the GCoast race on Sunday.  Perhaps some of us can meet up next trip and, of course, if you're in Chicago please feel free to use the email addy above and I will take you out on my town.

FWIW I am a firearms advocate but hardly a gun "nut," just generic nuts.  Ta ;>)

I find the Arms laws in Australia some what strict, for example I could probably kill more people with a .22 pistol than a .45 just simply because of the higher ammo/weight ratio, the easier concealment, and the easier use of flash/sound suppression methods; but the .45 is illegal and the .22 is not, however I would prefer to protect my family with a .45 then a .22.

It all comes down to the owners state of mind, and that should be the deciding  factor in the allocation of weapons licenses.

Oh and if anyone thinks the firearm is an Invalid form of self defence in a home invasion scenario, move too Perth and mix with the locals, you will hear some scary stories...

It doesnt matter what stories they have to say. If you look at the legislation, "self-defense" is not considered to be a valid reason for a firearms license.
Plus, since it has to be locked in a safe with the ammunition stored in a separate locked container, if you have time to get it out and load it......

Besides, people in Perth are weird.

Valid or not (and commonwealth legislation isn't exactly moral gospel) I would rather us a gun to fend off an offender (or multiple thereof) who is also most likely armed (with a knife or other), then with a commonwealth legislation and good will to others.

There are perfectly legal gun lockers that can dispense a pistol quickly (a clip separately), you would have time if your house is up to standards security wise, if they try and force there way inside you will hear it, know its a definite threat and thus have a right to defend yourself and your family.

The east has funny accents...

I wonder what would happen if a home invader managed to make it past the security screen and dead locked, solid wood door........?
