Subject: Courier Mail Article: Many Aussie women lack manners and are 'foul-mouthed and loud'
Panther    4/22/2009 6:29:32 PM
http://www.news.com.au/couriermail/story/0,23739,25365800-952,00.html Please pardon me if this has absolutely nothing to do with defense related issues. But this article on Australian society really blindsided me! Is it true? If the link doesn't work, then i will paste the article in a follow up post.

The fact that people in America don't make enough from their jobs to avoid the need to request additional money from customers simply for doing their jobs doesnt say much for their society. When you pay your bill at a restaurant you are paying both for the goods (the food) and the services (the waiter and the chef), that should be plenty.

I know i'm young (21) but i've never given a tip or seen anyone give a tip and the only time i've ever even seen a tip container was at a BYO thai restaurant in armidale (good food though).

I disagree, why shouldn't a portion of payment be performance related?

While I agree 100% with the American way on labour relations as I believe in the absolute minimum of labour market regulation (I think there should be child labour, slavery and perhaps some workplace safety laws), in practical terms I hate the American custom of tips making up a significant proportion of service staff's wages. It is a downright pain in the arse to have to have a wallet full of dollar bills so that you can tip the barman for every drink you buy. Also, how does is the customary $1 per drink tip adusted to cope with inflation? I don't want a pocket full of 5 and 10 cent pieces as well!!!I also doubt the value of tips as an incentive in the US as in my experience it is just expected. I would rather the staff were paid enough to live on with no tip expected, with people just tipping for outstanding service as I do now in Australia.

Yes its $1.00 per drink, and 15% average per meal, plus Sommaliers fees for corkage if u r into wine. And oh if u spell good u will be considered proper and English and served tea and ignored for being square. In t5he era of "Spell checker" if u spell good implies u do not understand modern tech like computers. So conclusion, a good speller is an ignormus when it comes to computers. I am sure Bill Gates makes more money than Shakespeare so screw the spelling BS.

Actually, if you put in the effort and tend to spell correctly and use the proper grammer it shows that you've put some thought into your answer or question and people are more likely to take you seriously. It can also be taken as an example of a higher standard of education. If I handed an Assignment in with "u" instead of "you" and other substitutions it would be handed back to me as a fail, i see no different between that and how you spell and write elsewhere.

No Herc... d@mmit... Necromancer, it has less to do with my questioning your level of intelligence and more to do with "WTF are you talking about currently"! It's one thing if you were to ever text me on my cell, which i would understand the reason, but it is a totally different thing on a computer with spell check even!
