Subject: What do some of our Australian friends know of Admiral Dennis C. Blair?
HERALD1357    1/5/2009 7:46:39 PM
He's named as the choice for US National Intelligence Director. All I know about him, is that he supposedly did something incredibly stupid during the East Timor crisis, but I never got a straight story on it. Herald

Admiral Blair attracts more Blowflys than an aussie outdoor dunny, though his service record and awards represent  his 34 years of service. Though this is another Obaama  military appointment to his junta.Subject to congress approval.

It's a pity Husky got banned as I could take some joy in reminding him about american involvement in ET which he so enthusiastically dismissed and which has peripherally been confirmed by recent programs such as "The Howard Years".

I can't recall Blair "coqueing up" anything - but as for US involvement?

- An ARG was in place off of ET with 5 Marines on board.  They came straight from Shoalwater where the training op was cancelled due to other priorities
- SecDef and CINCPAC also made a flying visit to jakarta to have a frank discussion witth the Indon Armed forces Chief of Staff (Wiranto) that the US would not stand by if Indonesia escalated the action
- A subsequently "pulled" article paraphrased the ARG Flag as stating that if Indonesia escalated events he would not be idly standing by waiting for direction - that he had a degree of autonomy and would use it to his maximum authority.

It's always been argued (by the husklys of the world) that no US Forces were in ET -  Thats also untrue as some 200 personnel were "scattered" through ET including helicopter assets. USMC, USN, USAF and US ARMY  were all present (some as part of Operation Warden)

I didn't think that Blair was part of any of the critical decision making issues - unless it was internal and peripheral (??)
Would be interested to know how when and where though.

finger fart - the reference to the ARG is obviously not "5" marines.  It's the entire ARG complement including the "nn" thousand marines originally in transit for Shoalwater

I recall news footage of a large US Amphib (couldn't tell if it was a Tarawa or Wasp) sitting off Dili at the time of the intervention.  I also recall comments to the effect that, but for US C3 assets, helo and medical support, we would not have been able to act at all.
