We were offered some in the early 70's but Whitlam refused referring to them as mercenaries, probably one of the stupider defence decisions of the time.
 
Actually had the pleasure of meeting a couple of Gurkha's at an AASAM during the early 90's, interestingly most of them had the surname Gurung.  Found them to be very friendly and extremely professional i.e. they didn't decapitate a particularly painful, totally ignorant and openly racist little creep in our team.  (Our sergeant did tear him a new orifice afterwards though).
