Subject: Are 6 RAR and 8/9 RAR Light Infantry or Motorized Infantry?
Volkodav    10/24/2008 4:25:00 AM
The RAR Anniversary Edition of Contact Magazine lists the reforming 8/9 RAR as Light Infantry as well stating that 6 RAR has been reroled from Motorized Infantry to Light Infantry. What is this? I thought both Btn's were Motorized with Bushmaster IMV's? Both, along with 49 RQR, were Motorised with Interim IMV's in the mid 90's. I had assumed, after the RRES was axed, that 6 RAR had eventually replaced their Bushranger Landies with Bushmasters and remained in the Motorized role. What happened?

Both 8/9RAR and 6RAR are motorised infantry. Contact magazine had old information.

Apparently LAND 400 is looking at a purchase of up to 600 IFV vehicles (basis of provisioning), sufficient to equip 6x battlegroups within Army, including 6 and 8/9RAR...

I guess they will all be the same one day. Mechanised or motorised definitions will become irrelevent...

Army is also keen for a 7th ASLAV Squadron, most likely to be added to the existing B Sqn 3.4 Cav Regt, but time will tell if the vehicles are purchased...

That is all.

Acually, current thinking is it won't be a 7th ASLAV sqn, but simply one of the existing ASLAV sqns (most likely from 2/14) moving to Townsville. Whethere the sqn remains a sqn of 2/14 or becomes A sqn 3/4 cav regt or whether 3/4 cav is expanded to include a regt HQ or not is unknown. There isn't currently enough soldiers OR vehicles to fully equip the two existng regiments as it is, so I'm pretty sure the headshed is keen to flesh out the two current regiments before increasing the number of sqns. For example my regiment is supposed to have a posted strength of 467 soldiers, but currently only has a number in the low 300s. Interestingly under the Army 2016 plan regiment is supposed to expand to around 520 soldiers by ~2014 odd. I think the army is going to wait to then before expanding B3/4 int a full regiment. Who knows what actually happens though. I'll probably be posted to B3/4 in 2010, so I might find out then.
