Subject: Should we abolish the RAAF combat fleet??
DropBear    6/13/2005 4:53:55 AM
In response to lacrobat's comment wrt "Why not cut the JSFs entirely?" I am interested to know how many of you believe the F-111, F-18 and Hawk127 are a complete waste of time, resources, money, training, funding, manpower etc etc etc... What would you spend the allocated funds on otherwise? You know my views, what are yours...

>>>Why does AF need to be separate? In the US, USAF IMHO is too independent. They shun (and underresource) crucial missions like CAS and transport as inglorious. Yet they won't turn over the A-10s and are muscling in on UAVs.<<< The USAF is not really comparable to the RAAF. The US has USMC and USN aviation to supplement the USAF. I think the RAAF takes the right measures to fulfill the missions required of it by the other two services. You would trust the Army to take care of Maritime strik missions adequatly?

I would keep the USN And USA and each keep the sea- and land-based assets accordingly. Certainly naval air is different. They have to fly off carriers and supply ships at sea, do patrols, reacue, etc., all over water except as they use land bases sometimes. But do you build the Navy a strip at Camp Rhino? No, you build the Air Force a strip at Camp Rhino, and they fly land-based aircraft from it to strike chiefly land-based targets. IMHO USAF has no other role than to support Army needs. What else would they do? (Oh, SAC? Doesn't kill my line of thought.)

"Actually I want a balanced defence force, which is why I'm happy to see cuts to the RAAF (or its disbandment)" - umm... yup, right, are we advocating the disbandment of the RAN or to get rid of the Army's tanks...? you need to get that airforce chip off your shoulder mate.

"umm... yup, right, are we advocating the disbandment of the RAN" geez, going on previous traffic we had people defending the ANZACs and yet are averse to a real ship (AWD) with proper capability? (ever since we lost the Hobart/Bris/Perth for AA management) this sounds like these ferkin monkeys I had to deal with in the ALP. let me paraphrase my response to them (in brackets): AWD = evil ballistic missile facilitator (thanks for demonstrating that you know ferk all about Aegis and the fact that the ANZACs couldn't attack an Icelandic Fisheries inspector let alone defend themselves against a flight of rampant cessnas) M1's = evil attempt by the Govt to engage in expeditionary warfare (thanks for demonstrating that you know ferk all about the Centurions and Vietnam - 10 pts for showing that you know ferk all about aust military history) LHA's = evil attempt by the Govt to engage in expeditionary warfare (thanks for demonstrating that you know ferk all about how big a patch we need to police and for understanding that we barely could look after Micronesia if we didn't have the right gear. Thanks for also understanding that you have no idea about how to look at an atlas and question our current capbility to fasttrack assets to Fiji, Samoa, Vanuatu, or ET) for ferks sake. this is turning into a circus

" "The RAAF is basically the only offensive force we have." that has done SFA for half a century, wasting how much money that the deployable services could use? "If you want to talk about things that have never and will never be used, look at the Leos and Abrams. " Of course that ignores the fact that in the last 50 years the Centurions were used extensively in combat. " Hello out there in dream land... When the Centurions were in battle, so were the Canberra bombers. You can't just pick tanks and forget about the capability of the air combat fleet. With the 35th TFW USAF, the Camberras flew 8% missions and had 16% total successful BDA. You can't piss on their effort chum.

The Navy is getting it's AWD,s and LHD,s. The Airforce is getting its F35's and AWACS, and the Army is getting its tanks and new arty!. All the Services are getting their new toys to play with, So why are we arguing???
