Subject: Joint Greek/Turkish Aegean Oil Venture.
2 Eagle    1/10/2008 1:54:50 PM
Consider the benefits, both political, economical and potentially military of these two countries putting aside their differences and developing the known oil deposits in the Aegean. Questions: 1) How would the oil revenues change the current status quo? 2) Would a union of Turkey and Greece produce a regional superpower, with the oil revenues? 3) Would both countires agree to share the revenues?

If you look at the demographics of Turkey you will see that it is an overwhelmingly young country (in terms of age of population). Given Kane's comments on young peoples attitude towards Greece, the chances of these countries becoming federated are less that a snowballs' in Hell.

It is unfortunate that people cannot see past their own emotions. Look at what oil money has done for the Arabs. Think what it could do for those two countries. Well, you can bring a horse to water, as the saying goes, but you cannot make him drink.
As an aside...I read where the Greeks are supporting Turkish entry into the EU. Is this an unfriendly act? I also read where they sent rescue units to Turkey during the earthquake...same thing?

I don't think they want the Eu thing but yes both countries helped each other during earthquakes. The thinig is, both countries are wrking hard to get along well.....actually we do get along well and there is no hatred propogandas. But whenever people read those history books they hate Greeks :)
Thats why a lot of people do not like Greeks in here...history

Kane...there are two sides to every story. Kemal Attaturk issued strict orders that there would be no killing of civilians but the Turks shot Greek civilians on sight anyway. Also, the Turks were getting plenty of supplies from the Russians while the Greeks had been abandoned by the English and French and were getting no supplies at all. If they would have gotten supplies the outcome might have been different. Who knows? So history depends upon how you read it and what you want to read into it, if you are too emotional as are some people. I'm sure if I were a Turk (or a Greek) reading the same article the interpretations would be different. It is natural to ignore the bad parts and stress the good ones in history, but that does not change them.
Oil is the answer.  Think about it. You don't have to get married...just make a deal and get the oil. Tell me that Turkey would not be better off with oil profits, even if you still had animosity against the Greeks. You could let your Jewish allies handle the deal:)

I have no animosity against Greeks...not anymore
Any deal with them would be good IMO.....but the current big problem is the Cyprus issue...as both sides won't give up and as long as it remains  sides won't be friendly to each other...

Hello Kane,
Yes, Cyprus is a problem. I don't have a good answer for that one, but there are better minds than mine who can solve the problem, I'm sure. There is much animosity there because the Turkish planes used napalm on the people. Napalm,. how awful. I know, we used it too, in Vietnam...don't bother telling me. Nevertheless, all problems have a solution, but people must TRY to find it. Another problem is that there are a few saber rattlers on both sides that just don't know when to stop preaching war.

2 Eagle,

Why do you think that Turks are the ones who hate the Greeks? Don't most Greeks feel the same way towards us either? I do believe that we should stop hating each other and start working together in the future, but while you seem like you want Turkey and Greece to work together, I only see in your comments Turks killing Greeks. Is that how you are going to convince people that we should work together? I have no doubt that you don't have bad intentions, but it looks like you have some kind of hatred going on against us, Turks.

steved    its a utopia!   3/2/2008 7:51:37 PM
i think talking about peace between Turks n Greeks its hopeful, otherwise a union between these 2 countries is a very ugly joke! At first there is too fresh the crimes Turks did in 1922, then there are more differences than similarities between the traditions of these countries. We have to accept that there are 2 different worlds...
These predictions should be noticed and there are not mine.
Ruleness of the Aegean Sea and the oil could cause a war, the increase 6 to 12 miles is the trigger which Greece is handling
thnx

Peace between Turkey and Greece is not a joke...both countries are already in OK relations...union would be a utopia indeed.
And I belive it's because of people like you.....crimes of Turks in 1922? What is that, sacking imperialist supported Greeks from our country a crime? Do you know what Greeks did to places they've retreated? There are crimes in wars and I can understand that but you can't just accuse Turkey .....
There are no 2 different worls...although it changes from region to region we have a lot in common. I've seen it with my own eyes.
