I have to agree with SGTObvious when it comes to the terrain and geographic border locations. It would be like watching snails wrestle. Iran's weapons program is quite a bit rusty - in the literal sense. Turkey has the F-16 and some pretty good pilots. But Turkey's biggest drawback in any confrontation would be its politicians. Since the death of Ataturk, Turkey has been known to side-step confrontations. But let's not forget the contribution Turkey made to the Korean conflict. Outstanding fighters! But since those glory days, Turkey has stuck by it's foreign policy "Peace at home, peace in the world." Due to the corruption within its political boundries, "Peace at home" is but a faraway dream. Turkey does not contain the finances that would allow them to dedicate a force of troops to its own intervention of sorts; hence American defence contributions. When it comes to Syria... Turkey and Syria signed a 'No-war' treaty with each other a few years ago. To this day it's beyond me as to why, because Turkey and Israel have become staunch allies economically and militarily. Syria has also become a strong enclave for militant training and support for Kurdish separatist.

My money would be on the defensive side as well - both countries have formidable defensive structures but not so expeditionary forces. Turkeys expeditionary capabilites easily outscore Irans, but Irans chief defensive weapon would be its people, the average shmoe who works down the local garage, has a wife, 2.4 children and an AK47 in the cupboard waiting for some foreign bastard to set foot in his neigborhood. Iran would never succed in an invasion or even an air assault against Turkey, but if Turkey were to attack Iran it could get interesting. They would have to be very careful to avoid that average shmoe and limit the war to a quick air assault.

I'm a Turk and I know the Turkish Army very well. It is not wise to just look at the number of tanks or fighters. The training/experience level of the troops and especially the pilots, who impress everyone in Red Flag, should also be considered. Also the electronics are kept up-to-date. The artilery(Firtina, TOROS rockets), Mobile Stinger Systems and the thermal-rifle-scopes(which I saw on G3, M4/M16, Dragunov) make it hard for the Iranians to survive a land battle. Night peration capability of the fighters, helos and the infantry is excellent. The only problem is with the M60 MTBs, instead of being upgraded they should be replaced with Leo2s or M1s but both Germany and US caused problems. The "2015 Turkish Tank" project seems to be very optimistic, 10 years of peace is too much of a hope. By the way, why can't we see anything Turkey produces on military sites?

Turkey has better aircrafts and pilots but Iran has devastating missiles!i think that this would be a very long war(over 2 years) with Iran the final winner!

Turkey and Iran dont want to fight with each other.Iran wants Turkey to support him against Israel,USA.After Davos crysis(Februrary 2009) Iran closed his ties with Turkey against Israel.Turkey is old friend of Israel and ally of USA(Respected NATO member). That is why Iran doesnt wants to lose Turkey.Turkey is trying to stay balanced on both sides

The answer is simple. None of them can invade each other. Even US can not invade mountainous Iran.
