They told us in the school the French Army left Russia because of the Russian Winter. As I remember the teachers didn't value the Russian military actions greatly. I suppose they didn't realy liked the Russians. I understand mostly (I think) why was left Moskva to the enemy. But why did left the French it ? Both without fights. And I know very few about the later Russian actions. (In Poland, in the German states)

"A great what if. What would happen if Napoleon was not at Egypt at the time and Napoleon could have faced Suvorov in Italy " As far as I remember Suvorov had about 25.000 men. There were four French armies 20-25.000 men each. Suvorov was so lucky he could fight against them one by one. If Napoleon were there he could have concentrated two or more armies to one. I think it would have been Suvorovs first lost battle. But what if? After destroy all French armies in Italy he wanted to move against Paris, but he was ordered join to the allied forces in Switzerland. What if he and allied troops north of the Alps started towards Paris?

It was a combination of combat, weather(mud going in, winter going back)and the proasaic necessity of leaving garrisons behind(just like in a risk game). I don't think it is at all insulting to the Russian Army to say that they could take it and the French couldn't.

Churchill referred to Borodino as the bloodiest battle of the 19th century. I think the losses were on the order of between 40-50,000 for each side. Napoleon is supposed to have said that at Borodino the French Army proved themselves worthy of victory while the Russian Army proved themselves worthy of immortality. You have said that Kutusov is underrated, how about Bagration?

A commander is responsible for all he could possibly have forseen. If a sudden earthquake had swallowed up the French army that would be a valid excuse. But Bonny knew perfectly well about the winter, bad roads, lack of forage, etc. If he didn't know enough, he didn't study enough. In any case the Russians, he forgot to note, had to endure the same winter. Even if he had been defeated only by the winter, he was defeated by Russia. It would have been more honorable for him to admit that. Unfortunatly he could not admit to being human.
