Subject: Terrorists Attack Russian School - Hold 400 Hostage Including 200 Children
Roman    9/1/2004 4:00:57 AM
These Muslim terrorists (I have no doubt it is them despite the fact that it has not been confirmed yet) are complete scum. From CNN: http://www.cnn.com/2004/WORLD/europe/09/01/russia.school/index.html Attackers seize Russian school Wednesday, September 1, 2004 Posted: 3:49 AM EDT (0749 GMT) A girl is hurried away from the scene. RELATED • Moscow suicide bomber kills 9 • Explosions led to Russia crashes YOUR E-MAIL ALERTS Chechnya (Russia) Russia or CREATE YOUR OWN Manage alerts | What is this? MOSCOW, Russia (CNN) -- Armed attackers have seized a school in a town in southern Russia, and Russia's ITAR-TASS news agency says about 400 people, including 200 children, are being held. The Interfax news agency, citing Ismel Shaov, a regional spokesman for the Federal Security Service, said there were 17 attackers, both male and female, and the gang included some who were wearing explosive belts. Wednesday's seizure took place on the first day of the Russian school year, in the town of Beslan in North Ossetia, Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) said. Video of the scene from Russian Television showed Russian forces stationed near the school, some of them behind a tank, as the sound of gunfire could be heard. A young girl and an older woman were hurried to safety by the armed forces. Beslan is located 19 miles (30 km) north of Vladikavkaz in southern Russia, which borders the troubled Russian republic of Chechnya. The seizure of the school comes a day after a female suicide bomber killed nine people and herself, and wounded 51 others when she detonated a bomb outside a subway station in northeastern Moscow. (Full story) Authorities did not immediately say if the female bomber was Chechen. The bombing marked the second major terrorist attack on Russia in a week, following the near simultaneous attacks on two Russian airliners by what authorities believe were two Chechen women suicide bombers. Eighty-nine people died in the crashes. Female Chechen suicide bombers are known in Russia as "black widows." Authorities have said traces of the explosive hexogen were found in the wreckage of both planes. Hexogen, when mixed with nitroglycerin, forms a plastic explosive similar to C4 and has been used by Chechen rebels in attacks on Russian soil in the past. Chechen rebels -- who refused to take part in Chechen elections held Sunday and vowed to take their fight to Russian soil -- have denied responsibility. But many Russian politicians are already linking them to Tuesday's suicide bombing, calling it revenge for the elections in which a Kremlin-backed candidate won the presidency. Russian troops have battled separatist guerrillas in Chechnya since 1994. In October 2002, about 50 Chechen rebels seized a Moscow theater and took about 800 hostages. After a three-day siege, Russian forces stormed the building using gas, killing most of the rebels and 120 hostages.

OMON are special forces under the command of interior ministry, often working together with police forces. Compare them to naval/army Spetsnaz and you get the idea, but what they do often reminds of the deeds of the SWAT and they are not under the military command as far as I know.

It's not just that, it's also the fact that countries like Saudi Arabia and Pakistan keep sending their "missionaries" there to agitate. These countries have a vested political interest in using theocracy to control their own societies, and in dumping off their own disgruntled youth into foreign conflicts, to keep them out of their own hair.

..Interesting... I am checking through various news portals on the net and the Fox News appears to actually sometimes call these scum terrorists. I think I might start reading this portal instead of CNN now... Any Americans care to say which of these two U.S. news sources is better - or if you know any other U.S. news sources - which is best? ... Fox comes under a LOT of heat, because they call a spade a spade, and do not use Politically Correct language, or - to quote The Kerry - Sensitive language. They are fair and balanced in the sense that they provide a counterbalance to the major networks and CNN. And make no bones about their conservative bent, while at least CBS and ABC give the illusion of being nuetral while are very very liberal in their slant and coverage of news. swhitebull

"My deepest condolences to the families of those children. Only animals would do such things. I suggest an old Chinese method of dealing with these people. Locate the extended familes of the scum, execute their family members one by one. Make these guys watch the death of their own flesh and blood, then excute them too. And do this on public TV. ~ARTAXERCES I agree. ~ROMAN ----------------- CONTRASTED WITH: ----------------- I sent the following to BBC (I also sent it to CNN - changing the letters BBC to CNN of course): Dear Madam or Sir, When will you stop referring to the beasts that took over the Russian school and held innocent children hostage as 'rebels', 'separatists', 'insurgents', 'militants, 'attackers' or 'hostage takers'? No act of terrorism is worse than what these animals have done - torturing children held hostage by not allowing them to drink. .........Despite all this, you still refuse to call these savages terrorists? ~ROMAN Sickly ironic.......it's inhuman to tolerate the torture of children, by these evil evil evil chechens but finding the extended families of these men and killing them (children are generally part of a family BTW) is A-OK." Such children can be placed in orphanages and for adoption. I do not see any other way to solve this. Most in the West still fail to understand that this is a societal war - one which we have to win if we want to survive as the West (or as India in Indian case, or as whatever non-Islamic civilization is dealing with these Islamists). These terrorists do not value their own lives very much, so ultimately you have to find some other way of deterring them. The best way is if their extended families exert pressure on them not to do anything stupid for fear of retaliation. That is the only kind of social pressure that is likely to work. Yes, it is brutal, but for the sake of self-preservation we have basically no other options and it certainly beats indiscriminate bombing of Islamic (be they Chechens [and indeed Arabs] in Russian case, or other Islamists in case of other countries) civilians. Frankly, if you have a better suggestion I would love to hear it. Of course, you would probably just give in to terrorist demands... which would work for a couple of years until they present new ones. Look at the example of Chechnya - given virtual independence by Russia after 1996 it became a warlord-controlled criminal and terrorist haven that came back to haunt Russia anyway through massive crime, kidnappings, terrorism and eventually repeated invasions of Russian Dagestan to create a Caucasus-wide Islamic state - so the Russians invaded again. I am sorry, but these terrorist scum have declared war and surrender is not an option. Appeasement has proven inneffective in dealing with them and current methods have had only limited success. Creating internal pressure from their society on these scum to behave themselves for fear of retribution needs to be tried next.

"I'm beginning to believe that there's going to have to be some kind of action against family members, in order to deter the suicide attackers. The suicide attackers may not care for their own lives, but they won't want to see their loved ones suffer. I can't think of anything less than this that would deter organized and determined suicide-killers. Since governments can't kill or harm innocent family members of suicide killers, armed vigilante groups would have to be formed for this purpose. It would have to be done as an extra-judicial non-state type of action, perhaps with its own form of due process. The targetting would have to be specifically towards the loved ones of the killers, rather than arbitrarily or randomly. Is there a way to codify a set of vigilante ethics?" Precisely - I believe the exact same thing you do on this matter. It is essential to be discriminate in targetting and not just kill random civilians. Also, yes keeping vigilante ethics straight would be a problem. As to so called "Human Rights Groups" they have already lost credibility with me, precisely because of what you say - they only concentrate on state crimes and what's more they even shift blame from terrorists onto the victim states: U.S. aircraft miss their target and hit civilians instead - U.S. is responsible - Fair Enough Russian soldiers get out of control and commit crimes in Chechnya - Russia is responsible - Fair Enough Terrorists fly planes into the Twin Towers and the Pentagon - U.S. is responsible for 'creating root causes of hatred' - !!!! Terrorists take hostage Russian school and kill hundreds of children and adults - Russia is responsible for the casualties and for inciting these terrorists - !!!! Simply moronic IMHO... BTW: The European Union already seems to be blaming Russia for the School crisis and the casualties. Sigh...

it's not so much a us media bias against russia as it is the fact that all of our mainstream media has their resources tied up at the moment, waiting for us to scratch a mosque. keeping in mind how tough the russian people are, i would pray that putin doesn't unleash the great bear in the form of a nuclear weapon on mecca during the hadj.

i'd say our boys who posed at abu grahib wouldn't even want to be in the same room as the 3 captured fighters.

"How would you know? Are you in telephone contact with these people? You're sounding like their spokesman, for Pete's sake" No, it's called google and Reuters.

I hope that there is a measured response to this attrociy, I am sure that throughout the muslim world there is revulsion at the death of these young children, and hope that this will turn people against these terrorists. The Russian army must also use this oportunity to take control, though in the past the Russian army has gone OTT, killing many civilians into the process, and thus gaining the support of the militants.
