Subject: The problem in Chechnya
cjb    7/10/2002 3:27:57 PM
It seems that the problem of Chechnya will not go away easily. The vidoes of atrocities commited by Chechen rebels are gruesome. It is bewilidering to me why Russia does not deploy the full force of its millitary into the region. Also the instabilty in the Caucases region is a cause for serious concern given its proximaty to the Middle East. It is no secret that rebel factions in the region are being supplied by Iran and other radical Islamic groups. Why Russia will not bring its full strength to bare on Chechnya is bewildering? I have a feeling that the troubles in this area could spread like wildfire given Russia's poor security recarding nuclear stockpiles. What is the best way to address this issue? Also given the combatants involved it is hard to get reliable info on who is commiting the vast majority of war crimes and battle reports.....

"Also the instabilty in the Caucases region is a cause for serious concern given its proximaty to the Middle East." The Caucases, the Caspian and Central Asia have become just as important as the Middle East due to the huge oil and gas reserves in the region. By the way, you seem to be out of date with current events in Chechnya. The Russian military now controls the majority of Chechnya. The Chechen rebels have lost their war against the Russian military and now use terrorism against Russian civilians to continue the conflict.
