Subject: what if ?????

I pose the question what if Hitler and stalin had put aside their differences and ideologies to join in a pact including italy, japan. How would the allies have been able to overcome the mighty axis?Maybe the u.s. getting the bomb first or other smaller countries joining in for fear of occupation and destruction. THE axis would have been so powerful almost unstoppable to me.Does anyone have theories or ideas of what might have happened. I would think after the defeat of europe A mass invasion of the u.s.could have taken place with a combination of german, russian and japanese troops.THE u.s. was very worried after pearl harbor of a japanese invasion alone. the morale of the country would already be low from the losses in europe. This sanerio would have been likely and devastating to the free world..

There's only one problem with this whole what-if scenario. There was only one nation in the world that Hitler hated more than the Jews, and that was the Soviet Union. No one in the 1940s, with the possible exception of the Japanese and the Chinese, hated each other more than the Russians and the Germans. What was amazing was that they managed to stay more or less not enemies (friends is going a bit far) for as long as they did. Stalin seemed ready to buy into the self-delusion that Hitler was too busy with France to ever attack the USSR, but even he was convinced by summer 1940 that Russia was on the hit parade after England. He kept sending the Third Reich supplies in the hopes he could buy time for the Red Army to get its act together. Given that the only two people in the Axis that trusted each other was Hitler and Mussolini, I don't see this alliance happening. The Japanese Army really wanted to take on Russia again (once China and India were secured, and the US sued for peace), and the Japanese had nothing but contempt for the Germans. There was only one master race in the world, and as far as the Japanese were concerned, that was them. BTW, Chemist, that was Rutger Hauer, king of B-movies, in "Fatherland," not Nick Nolte. But a good movie and a great book, nonetheless. I think there may be a sequel book out.

The German nuclear weapons program was several years behind that of the US. By the time they would have had nukes, we would have already laid waste to a number of cities. And it would have taken them a while to build missiles that could carry nuclear warheads, primarily because they would have to build small enough nukes, which took a while for the US.

Hitler and Stalin wouldn't be able to put aside their differences. Hitler's all about the Laebenstraum baby! That means Russia was the target, but so was France by virtue of treaties. WWII was all about Hitler taking Russia, hence Japanese alliance. Kind of a dumb what if.

You fools the uS would of been crushed if Soviet and Axis joined forces during whole war. Japan would of had unlimited power due to German and Japanese Backing. England would of been gone by 1942. Africa would be undre Soviet/Axis Belt. Soviets would of been advanced becuase of German techs. The owuld of been the most unstoppab;e force.

You need a navy to get to the United States, and the United States had the world's largest navy. After Wake Island, we never lost a fight against the Imperial Japanese, and neither Germany nor the Soviet Union had the ability to build ships as large as the US could nor as quickly as the US could. Furthermore, the US was farther ahead on nuclear research than all the others combined, and would have accelerated such research if they had all allied against it. In addition, the United States had the ability to deliver a weapon to the Axis heartland while the Axis did not have the ability to do the same to the United States (we had radar and the XB-35, which came along long before the Axis developed their heavy bomber)..

Kadett, you are forgetting about Bataan and Savo Island, but you're still right. England might have been knocked off by 1942 (with Germany and Japan cooperating to crush the Empire in North Africa and India), but invading the US would have been a very difficult prospect. The Japanese had the navy, and a German-Soviet alliance would have had the army, but it still would have meant a 2000-mile invasion over open water, against land-based aircraft. Ask the crew of the Prince of Wales what happened to ships that sailed too close to land masses without massive air cover. With the exception of the U-boats, the German and Russian navies were little more than coastal defense forces or suicide squads--though the Italian Navy wasn't half bad--and I doubt the Royal Navy would have been so quick to pack it in. If necessary, they would have withdrawn to Canada to carry the fight on. Probably what would have happened was the Axis dictators would have started squabbling amongst each other and open war break out amongst them, giving the Allies a breather. It would have been an even longer and even more destructive war, but the Allies would still have won eventually (or revolution would have broken out in any one of the four Axis nations--Hitler, Stalin, Mussolini, and Tojo all had significant domestic enemies). Saying that all four nations would have cooperated seamlessly...you might as well make the case that aliens invade on the Third Reich's side. It's fun, but it's ultimately science fiction.
