Subject: Foreigners joining Danish Navy, Army, Air Force
Iano_returns    2/3/2006 6:48:36 AM
Hi, can anyone tell me if the Danish accept foreigners for their forces? Is there a scheme whereby you can gain citizenship through service? Presumably there is a basic level of Danish to be reached? Although English must be quite important also with your NATO commitments. Could anyone give an unbiased, no-pissing-contest rundown on the relative professionalism and scopes for a rewarding career in the Danish forces compared to a 1st world modern Western military, say the British or Americans? Thanks Iano

Hi, can anyone tell me if the Danish accept foreigners for their forces? Is there a scheme whereby you can gain citizenship through service? They do. You do need to live in Denmark, and have to be vetted. Foreigners are also exempt from some types of contracts (terms of the contract, not the function). If you want a reaction force contract (I think like the US Army NG) you would need a dispensation. That should cover most of the restrictions. Presumably there is a basic level of Danish to be reached? Although English must be quite important also with your NATO commitments. As per NATO, English it the command language on int'l ops. But a gather a minimum of Danish would prove practical, but I don't think it is required as in a degree. Could anyone give an unbiased, no-pissing-contest rundown on the relative professionalism and scopes for a rewarding career in the Danish forces compared to a 1st world modern Western military, say the British or Americans? What do you consider a rewarding career ? The other part of the question I would prefer to leave to others, as it is a matter of approach imv. :) TAC

Is there a scheme whereby you can gain citizenship through service? If there is, I have never heard of it.

Is there a minimum time you have to have lived in Denmark before you're eligible to apply? And as for certain contracts being limited, do you mean for example a foreigner could never get involved in military intelligence because of the sensitivity/conflict of interest possibilities? Or that certain schemes, i.e. longer careers are barred to foreigners? And if there isn't a citizenship scheme, then presumably you would be able to apply for asylum in the nation just like any other foreigner when you finish your service, and with your service would be hardly likely to be turned down? I know the French Foreign Legion and US forces have service = citizenship schemes, but in Britain ex-foreign-servicemembers have to apply like any other immigrant. Hence a lot of annoyance at Ghurkas and soldiers originally from the Commonwealth having to go through this process after 20 years of service in the British forces.

It is difficult to give clear answers because the material is vague and curiously in Danish. Basically the recruiting officer hold this knowledge. Is there a minimum time you have to have lived in Denmark before you're eligible to apply? Not as I read it. It is residence in DK that matters. If you're a Scandinav you can settle freely. If you're an EU citizen you can settle if you have a job or a guarantee of a job, like in the armed forces. Full citizenship can be applied for after 7 years of legal and permanent residence. If you commit certain crimes, more years are added to that. And as for certain contracts being limited, do you mean for example a foreigner could never get involved in military intelligence because of the sensitivity/conflict of interest possibilities? To some degree, yes, as particular contract are required for som certain types of functions. But it seems to rely on a case to case eval. When I said terms of contract, then it was in the context like, that you will not be eligible for 2-3 years of full salary if fired. Or that certain schemes, i.e. longer careers are barred to foreigners? I can't say for sure, but I don't think longer term carreers are barred. It seems to be the same, except that in the DK case you already have been through a succesful asylum process. Then you can even demand to be drafted, if you're fit. I'll try to see if I have time to elaborate on the careers thing, but it would make it, if you made an hypotethical of what you have in mind.

Its just something that I have mooted lately, the possibility of joining another countries armed forces. Alternatively, if I was to take up a career in my own countries armed forces, and for some reason got fed up of it, it could be a welcome change of scenery to shift to another countries forces and continue a military career and build a life there.

Aye, she would definitely be worth it. And from what I've seen of other Scandinavian girls, they beat what Britain has to offer hands down! Totty-tastic! Plus Britain gets more and more chav-ridden by the day, and Danmark seems to quite enjoy sticking the finger up at Muslim extremists...

Slightly off-topic, but a good friend of mine has a Greek-Cypriot father, so whenever he goes on holiday over there he has to carefully avoid conscription. But on the bright side, given that he can read and write, they would have to make him a General!
