Subject: Danish Airforce 2020?
Schackleford    6/5/2005 5:02:14 AM
Any ideas of what aircraft the Danish Airforce should choose to replace our F-16A's when they eventually reach their end. Denmark is a partner on the JSF program, so we will most likely end up with this modern and capable fighter-bomber. Baring that, the JAS39 Gripen seems to be the platform of choice. Being truly multirole, the Gripen is a fine modern aircraft for whatever needs there will arise for Denmark for the forseeable future.

Thanks for the offer; but they usually burn down that city by themselves - they are so annoying that way: When ever you have set your mind to burn that town and put some heads on the chopping block - then all you find when you get there are smouldering ruins. It takes the umph out of life!

Funny we should hear it from the Swedes... The spin the morning radio news gave, nearly gave me a heart attack. SVT-TTV-TT So it will be between these three birds. Until it is decided, the Swedes will be driveling at the potential prospect of some JAS39 exports.

Uh, sorry for posting something in Swedish. I expect to post something in english when it surfaces.... The news is that the Danish Air Force have secretly been investigating the Gripen as a possible replacement for the F-16.

Makes no sense. We're already partners in the JSF program and can expect the Americans to cut us a sweet deal on a batch of those. The F-35 is by far the better choice: The Grippen is roughly comparable to a modernized F-5, the Eurofighter is just about a European F/A-18. But the F-35 is a ultra-modern aircraft that is even surprisingly cheap compared to what you get.

What makes people think the F35 is any more sophisticated software and hadware wise than a Gripen? Just because its supposed to be stealthy?

" What makes people think the F35 is any more sophisticated software and hadware wise than a Gripen? Just because its supposed to be stealthy?" It IS stealthy, unless you buy into French Stratege's interesting theory that the stealth in JSF is all a lie (evil military-industrial complex, right wing conspiracy bla bla bla) The Gripen was only posssible thanks to the help of German and British companies who adviced the Swedes and supplied some key technologies. Compare that to the JSF which is entirely home-grown. Made by the same country that made the F-22 just before the JSF. The Eurofighter and Gripen are fine 4th generation aircraft, but the wars of tomorrow will be fought by 5th generation aircraft like the F-22, F-35 and whatever Russia is up to with the PAK_FA.

I think someone in the General staff wanted a good laugh. Besides you'll allways try to check up on the market. The main point about the F-35, in my view, is the engine: Stealth has a limited life on the strategic scene before countermeasures are found, Electronic will be replaced more than once during a fighters operational life. The engine however, that is next to impossible. I know the british put the Avon into the Phantom, but I am reminded of Dr. Johnsons remark. "A woman preaching is like seeing a dog walking on its hinder legs. It is not done well, but you are surprised to see it done at all!"
