Tercio: Gracias por la eludisacion. (Poor Spanish - We'll meet in China!) Generally: An extraordinary summit of muslim states will adress the issue of the cartoons. Egypt is threatning to break off the cooperation with Denmark on democracy in the Middle East. The Prime Minister has let an errand-boy answer, that such moves in no way whatsover will let lead to a change in Danish policy and protection of democratic rights in Denmark.

Let's take the confrontation with these Islamist leaders. I can't believe that this minor incident has caused so huge ripples in the water. Those Muslim losers must be in the market for a new scapegoat for all their problems. What ever happened to the "Zionist Conspiracy" or the "Evil Infidel American Empire stealing my oil and my turban"?

I quite agree. I once had a boss that would have been more convincing as a coordinator, if he hadn't toppled his teacup at every opportunity! These leaders say: We love tolerance, and will kill all intolerant people.

"Our Prime Minister will at the upcoming Nato-summit try and teach Erdogan something about freedom of the press." -Thomas And this is how it went... http://www.jp.dk/english_news/artikel:aid=3385532/ TARGET=_blank>Turkish premier slams the door By The Copenhagen Post Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan rushes in anger out of a Copenhagen press briefing with Danish colleague after seeing a Kurdish reporter there Freedom of the press has become the focus of Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's visit to Denmark. First he took up the opportunity to criticise a Danish newspaper's decision to print caricatures of Muslim prophet Mohammed. Then, on Tuesday afternoon, after discussing the matter with Danish Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen, Erdogan made his angry exit out of the Prime Minister's Office after noticing a reporter from a disputed Kurdish television station amongst the journalists waiting for the premiers' joint press meeting. The press meeting came to nothing, and journalists' focus turned instead towards the Kurdish reporter, who was there to report on the meeting for Roj TV, which the Turkish government claims has ties to terrorist organisations. Erdogan came to Denmark late on Monday and had lunch on Tuesday with Rasmussen, discussing daily newspaper Jyllands-Posten's decision to run a series of cartoons of Mohammed. Turkey is amongst the Muslim countries that have demanded that Rasmussen's government take action against Jyllands-Posten, but he has stated that the freedom of press is more important than Muslim sensibilities. Earlier today, Erdogan said at a debate meeting that respect for other cultures and religions had always been at the heart of Turkish culture. Turkey is currently striving to convince European nations that it is democratic enough to be fit to enter the European Union. -------- The Turks have traditionally seen themselves as interpreters and defenders of Islam in Europe. For example Denmark had (has?) an agreement with Turkey, by which they appointed imams from Turkey and sent them to mosques in Denmark. Also goes as to how to control Islam in Turkey and expatriate Turkish communities. But Erdogan (et al) really should have ignored the cartoons in Jyllands-Posten instead of impaling himself on the freedom of the press issue. He may have scored points in select groups, but it's no free ride playing that card anymore. "About the EU funds, since Spain has already to share the cake with Poland and other new members, and furthermore, by 2007 the tap will be closed to Spain, it hardly will be the reason for a Spanish frontal opposition to Turkey's membership." - Tercio Thanks for clearing that up. My opinion could only be a half-informed. :) TAC

No doubt about it: Erdogan is caught between a rock and a hard place!

1. IMO Erdogan is a very weak Prime Minister, who is going after every absurd way to improve his popularity in Turkey. The Cartoon issue is one of his most absurd ones. 2. That Kurdish Press has been closed in Germany and several other European countries due to proven ties with PKK terror organisation. 3. If Erdogan did not left the room when there is that Press agency who had ties with PKK; then he would lose points in the eyes of Turkish people. A strong PM might ignore that loss; he can not.

That Kurdish Press has been closed in Germany and several other European countries due to proven ties with PKK terror organisation. - The Danish police is currently investigating the Kurdish TV station. If it has terror links it will be shut down, just like in Germany and elsewhere. But until the investigation is over... 3. If Erdogan did not left the room when there is that Press agency who had ties with PKK; then he would lose points in the eyes of Turkish people. A strong PM might ignore that loss; he can not. - So he is actually confirming his weakness? TAC

AFAIK he only left the room when reporters started asking nasty questions - and he refused to appear on a joint press-conference with the Danish Prime Minister. How this is going to strengthen him in Turkey I don't know - I would imagine there are influencial circles that might be disappointed with a Prime Minister that makes a public fool of himself - and Turkey.

"I would imagine there are influencial circles that might be disappointed with a Prime Minister that makes a public fool of himself" Storming out of a press conference because you don't like the questions seems like something close to the definition of public fool to me. As I have just discussed with kane on the 4 month conscription- thread, and as Thomas have already said, noone was more surprised then the Prime Minister. ROI TV operates thanks to a loop-hole in the law, not the consent of the Danish government. Plans are in progress to deal with this. I suppose that the Minister of Justice will have to explain how this could have happened in the first place...

Curiously the Pakistani fundamentalist party posted the bounty on the one cartoonist making the twelve drawings, not knowing that 12 cartoonist had contributed with one drawing each. How's that for informed and knowledgebased decision-making, huh? (Or maybe they couldn't afford 12 bounties?) New death threats against Mohammed cartoonists By The Copenhagen Post Demonstrations in Pakistan have escalated into death threats against Danish illustrators who drew pictures of the prophet Mohammed The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has warned Danish travellers to Pakistan of increased hazard after a Danish newspaper's decision to publish cartoons of Muslim prophet Mohammed escalated into a bounty being placed on the heads of the cartoonists. Daily newspaper Jyllands-Posten published twelve cartoon drawings of Mohammed in September, sparking angry reactions from Denmark's Muslim population and a number of Muslim countries. A bounty of DKK 50,000 had been put on the head the cartoonist responsible for the drawings, daily newspaper Berlingske Tidende reported on Friday. The Pakistani group offering the reward mistakenly believes that the 12 cartoons were created by just one person. Danish Ambassador to Pakistan Bent Wigotski said the bounty had been promised by religious party Jamaat-e-Islami and its youth organisation, which had also demanded Danish representatives expelled from the country. Danish authorities immediately informed the Pakistani government about the death threats and bounty promised by the party, which is described as nationalistic and fundamentalist. Ever since the demonstrators marched through the streets of Islamabad, the party has been spreading its message through the media and flyers. Wigotski said he had no plans to leave Pakistan, despite hundreds of angry protest letters from Muslims around the world. 'But the situation is of course serious,' he said. 'They might want to get to the Danish illustrators, but if they can't reach them, they could make to with a scapegoat.' That scapegoat could be anybody, the embassy warned, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a new travel advisory for Pakistan warning Danes not to visit the country, given that the Jyllands-Posten cartoons were 'seen by many Muslims as derogatory and blasphemous'. Pakistani Ambassador to Denmark Javed Qureshi denounced the death threats. 'No Pakistani government would ever support such a thing, I'm sure that the current government will take action in the case. I can't imagine that a bounty like that doesn't violate Pakistani legislation,' said Qureshi, who was one of the 11 Muslim ambassadors in Denmark to sign a protest letter to Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen about the cartoons. Jyllands-Posten had no comment about the bounty placed on the cartoonists' heads.
