Subject: UoA MLRS ?
ej    9/27/2004 2:50:40 PM
I read somewhere that the new US army brigade unit of action will get a MLRS/HIMRAS battalion in addition to the 2 cannon batt, does anyone has any info about that ? the previous structure did seem very short on artillery .

I think that will be a HIMARS BATTERY, and that will only be in the infantry UA. The Armored UAs will have 2 batteries of Paladin. MLRS will stay in the FIRES UA.

That is interesting.....everything I have seen on the UAs (and I have to field new computers to them so I have to know the force structure) says the MLRS will be in the fires unit of actioan and not in the strike battalion in the UAs.

Maybe the batt. belongs to the fires UoA and in wartime they get transferred to the UoA and the guy who wrote the article got confused. Anyway, I think they are still experimenting with the current structure so changes like this could still take place.

Could be. My understanding of the structure will be 4 maneuver UAs, 1 fires UA, 1 aviation UA, 1 recon, surv & target acquisiotn UA, 1 Maneuver anhencement UA and 1 fires UA per UEx. The fires stay under the control of the UEx commander. But as you say, this stuff is kinda set in warm jello....stay tuned!!

Yup...fancy engineer UA The RTSA has the ability to find the enemy and direct fires, 120mm mortar through air strike. They have the mission of the old cavalry squadron with greater sensors and ability to hand off targets for shooting.

a squadron is a battalion sized unit so its not really a brigade . Do they get to keep the organic firepower of the cavalry squad. (M1 & M3) or do they just have humvees with RSTA equipment ?

RSTA UA Mission: Conducts Reconnaissance, Surveillance, and Intelligence operations to enable the UEx, JTF, or Joint Force Commander to focus joint combat power and effects with precision to simultaneously support current and future operations throughout the Area of Operation. It brings in the old MI battalion, plus some former corps MI assets, the LRSD which goes to a big company (perhaps commanded by a major) a support unit as well. It has more of an MI mission than cavalry mission. It is recon & surveillance, not fighting. The old cavalry squadron gets subsumed into a maneuver UA.
