Subject: curious about artillery's direction
norden    4/24/2008 4:05:55 AM
It seems to me that US artillery is focusing more on towed systems. Logistically understandable but what about "shoot and scoot" Is it that our current set of adversaries have no counter battery systems? A decade ago there was all this talk of MRSI (multiple round simultaneous impact)now it seems we are shooting smart shells. The Crusader was scrapped is there a replacement or are we gonna keep upgrading the 50 year old paladin?

My contact has faded considerablly in the decade since retirement.  What take I still have suggests the mid term procurement is a bit 'chaotic'.  Whatever is on paper for the next one or two decades is a risky bet.  In the longer term,15+ years and beyond depends so much on changes in technology, and political events.

My current wild guess is budget considerations will favor lighter & cheaper systems, with the R&D money going into the long term development of range, projectiles, and communications.

The new replacement for the Paladin is supposed to be the NLOS-C (Non Line Of Sight - Cannon).

Whether it will stay in the current configuration is anyones guess.

Negative,  the NLOS_C will not "Replace" the M109 series of SPH.  In the guise of the M109 - PIM (Paladin Integrated Management) this fmily of vehicle will continue to be the back bone of the fire support element for the Heavy Brigade Combat teams.

While we ae on the subject...

Does the current M109/Palladin have anything significant in common with the M109 models we used from the 1970s through the early 1990s.   While at FAO Basic Cours in 1982 we learned the latest M109 were  largely interchanble with the original models.  circa 1993-4 we were told the Palldin had essentialy zilch remaining from the older M109 series.  Even the chassis had major changes  to accomodate the new electrical, track, power, turret...systems.  Is this last correct?
