Subject: BALISTIC SOFTWARE PROGRAM

Does any one here know of a software program that allows you to find the maximum range of an artilery piece? I used to have one called Big Gun-MT, IIRC. Might have been all one word with or WO Caps? Need your help. Please.

Not currently.  The programs I used in service were propriotery & I'd not have a clue how you would apply them to a PC.  Back in the early 1980s there was a sort of simple program that was part of a training package for a engineerng calculator.  It lacked most of the features of the military programs.

I wouldn't have thought that there would be any useful PD software.  The stuff we used was in unix and written for the environment.  It was tied into the hi speed cameras, solenoids and sensor gates.

The easiest way to find max range is to look it up in the FT.  Of course this gives the range under standard conditions.  For a computer its not just the program its also the aeroballistic data.

NATO nations are moving over to the NABK, the NATO Armaments Ballistic Kernel, this is a fully and compehensively tested program written in Ada 95 and developed under NATO auspices that meets safety critical criteria using the modified point mass model (which uses 4 degrees of freedom).  This will run OK on a PC (basically that's what armies such as UK are using, (google 'FCA' or 'FC BISA' and look a LogicaCMG's stuff)).  However, my understanding is that it's only available to NATO nation governments.

Plus the contractors price is likely more than you would care to contemplate.

Why do you ask?

Through this link: http://e-ballistics.com/index.html you'll find an interactive E-book on ballistics, including some software. The module you're looking for is not available yet, but will get there. Very worthwhile reading btw.
