One of these http://www.army-technology.com/projects/pzh2000/images/pzh2.jpg"> Firing one of these http://www.somchem.co.za/images/misilecu.jpg"> V LAP pdf Link With this charge (Zone 6) http://www.somchem.co.za/images/bimod.jpg"> just achieved a range of 56km, not to shabby IMO. Combine this with the BAE's Course Corrective Fuse to help mitigate some of the range errors inherent to rocket asist projectiles and thats a very respectable system.

Doggtag, I think you got the M777 and NLOS - C mixed up, the triple 7 still has a 39 cal tube, it the NLOS C which has the totally redesigned 38 cal and smaller chamber, so when shooting conventional rounds the M777 will even outshoot the NLOS-C. What could we do with the M777 if weight wasnt such an issue (God damn you MV22) you ask? Well alot actually, I may have mentioned it before but when originally designing the recoil system it was always considered that the 52 cal tube was a possibility, and as such the recoil system internals and pressure vessels wee designed to accomodate the forces accordingly. Today due to advancements in metallurgy and ceramics we can make a 52 cal tube which weighs no more than a current 39 cal. This was a small research program instigated by the British MoD, I am not aware of a similar request for study by the US DoD. A lot is still to be done regarding the wear characteristics and life of these tubes, and I have no idea what they cost, but bottom line is longer tube with no significant weight gain are a defintite technical possibility.

How about the G5 and G6 - normal range 39km with max 53km . The G has been setting the standard for a long time. see http://www.denel.co.za/Landsystems/Artillery_Systems.asp

opps only noticed after my prev postthat the G5/6 platforms have been mentioned as the mother of artillery. Good to see that some of the stories i have heard about the G5/6 giving the American artilary a hard on are true. (Irrespective of polital views just plan weaopon to weapon comp)

On the DENEL systems, I'm just curious if the VLAP concept can be engineered into their 105mm ammunition series. Even considering the fact that the LEO 105, at 57 calibers including its muzzle brake, is easily twice as long as many other nations' 105mm artillery tubes, I think its well worth it if it means shooting almost 30km. (...am wondering if a 105 VLAP would do 40 or greater.) As such (even without VLAP), for its size (using that mounting trialed on a LAV III), this would be the perfect counter system to challenge anyone using Russian/WP/chinese/etc 122mm systems, especially that 2S1/M1974 122mm SP (SO122) Gvozdika system.
