Can anyone here provide a brief description on how to handle a mis-fire?

ArtyEngineer two more items on my mind about the Triple7. 1. Wheel Arm Assembly Hydrostrut Failure. a) whats the procedure when the ground is frozed rock hard? 2. Loading & Firing under Hydraulic Failure. a) Would a 3/4in. powerbar be safer than a 3/4in. ratchet. Powerbar has no moving parts, where the ratchet has moving parts that could fail.

"Just to clarify, the 40 ft was on permafrost without digging the spades at all!!!! Normally firing top zone at min QE with minimum spade engagement (3 Inch) you will get 3-4ft of displacement on the initial round. after that everything settles down and once those big spades are fully seated the gun hardly moves." Reminds me of a tale from the Korean War. Some US truck columns came under attack. The artillery battery in the column unlimbered the 105mm howitzers & begain direct fire on the commies. SOP for DF is to fire full charge as the DF telelscopic sight was designed assuming a full charge muzzle velocity. Plus it saves time not screwing around with the bags. Unfortunatly the road was paved the ground frozen solid. The first shots sent the howitzers skidding, and the loaders begain franticly cutting charges to remedy the 'displacement'.

I have created a monster ;) !!!!! I see you have been studying the "Degraded Operations" section of the Student Handout. 1) If the ground is so frozen that a pit cannot be dug in front of the wheel then the crew need to use "whatever material is available" to build an obstruction in front of the wheel to prevent the wheel moving as the vehicle pull the howitzer forward and hence causing it to rise up to "ride height". 2) Yes a power bar (Breaker bar is the term we use) would be safer than a Ratchet, however as the rotation required to open the breech manually is about 180 degrees this cannont be accomplished in one motion, and requires repositioning of the ratchet. This would require removal and repositioning of the "Power Bar". This is deemed unsafe at it leaves 1 crewman fully supporting the weight of the breech block and carrier (abour 250lbs!!!) while the power bar is removed and repositioned.

I'm not nit-picking, just curious. When you are re-positioning the ratchet doesn't the crewman have to support the breech anyway. About the wheels - is the elevation mechanism strong enough to raise the platform from the ground if you supported the gun barrel with something.

For an instant he is supporting, however imagine in cold weather using arctic mittens and the guy repositioning the breaker bar starts to fumble ;) that breech is goin to get very heavy. The elevation mechanism is actually strong enough to lift the weapon, however the elevation drivebelts are not. Keep em comin Smoke, I will make a believer of you yet ;)

Arty, I am a believer in anything that is good for the military. During my life in uniform I always "questioned", in a good way, how things were done. I have met to many soldiers, when questioned about anything, simply say " It's always been done that way" I hate that phrase. So if I give the impression that I hate change, sorry. I hate stagnation

You have been strangley quit these last few days, keep the questions comin, they are vastly more sensible than some of those asked by the crews and mainainers who have just recieved the weapons :)

Arty,I'm back, computer problems. My motherboard failed, I'm waiting on delivery of my new computer from Dell. I am saving my questions on the M777 until then. I have many, many issues for those here to answer. Using daughters laptop for this. To quote an American General " I shall return"
