Subject: Artillery for Light Troops
Thomas    6/11/2003 5:24:12 AM
On the infantry board, there is a discussion of the future of light infantry. On the armour board there is a discussion of the future (if any) of the Light tank. To complement these discussion in the spirit of combined arms: What sort of artillery should go with Light troops. It should be airportable. It should be "resupplyable". It should be able to operate under the conditions of the Light Infantry. Any thoughts?

Yes I'm Danish, and I think You are Norwegean. Well as a soldier I was/am a volunteer in Luftmeldekorpset (Royal Observer Corps - to english speakers). As a conscript I served my time in the Air Force Light Infantry - they lived to regret that.

Hvis du virkeligt er norsk, så bliver min opgave med at drille svenskerne meget lettere. Sorry about my atrocious spelling.

Well, the USMC thing with a SupaCat + 120mm mortar might be the future trend.

"In my opinion the towed 120mm mortar is the best form of indirect fire support for light units. " This appears to be untrue in Afghanistan. -" target="_blank">http://sill-> "A Case for Howitzers in Afghanistan"

The British formerly used the OTOBreda 105mm light gun, a pack howitzer in a very real sense. They now use a gun designed by Royal Ordnance which was the world standard in light artillery until the French LG1.

An 81mm version of the AMOS twin 120mm direct-fire capable morta system: an autoloader provides high burst rate of fire. This dould be sized to fit LAV/113/etc turret rings. Considering the fire control computer in an MLRS has 10-digit grid inputs to target cluster warhead missiles that cover several football fields, surely a system to drop 6-8 81mm rounds in a 10-30m target area (airburst optional) at ranges to 8km (based on current available breechload mortars) should be feasible. Most light trrops would have access to some kind of AFV that could mount this turret, a single 81, or even a twin-barrel remake of the French 60mm- lightweight, cheap saturation fire for light engagements.

The M777 weighs just 3,745 kg and can be towed by a 2.5t 4x4 or lifted by helicopter. It also splits into two parts weighing 2,414 kg and 1,331 kg. Some argue that the 155mm ammo is too heavy, but do you want Artillery or a pea-shooter?

"They've tried. 81mm is not worth it, since they can be carried if need be." The British have used 81mm mortars in modifed F432 APC's for years, and it has proved itself to be a very effective system. Britain has stopped using 120mm mortars decades ago; although the 81mm has less range and explosive power, the rounds are lighter and the rate of fire is greater, making them extremely deadly.
