Here is a link to the canadian forces website regarding their new M777 Howitzers. Pretty good video clip of some of the operator training conducted at Sill contained on same page. http://www.army.forces.gc.ca/lf/English/6_1_1.asp?FlashEnabled=1&id=808

S-2, During my time in the military ( 1 RCHA was one of my regiments ), an Officer was always the FO. His/her job within the regiment was called FOO officer( Forward Observation Officer ). These FOO's were attached to other units ie: infantry, armour, engineers, to assist in providing artillery fire if requested. Capt. Goddard was in that role as FOO officer for 1 PPCLI, unfortunitly the vehicle she was riding in(LAV III) was hit by an RPG. She was standing in the turret and was wounded. Canadian military has an Equal Rights Policy that allows females to apply for combat positions, they must go through the same training and pass the same test. There are some damn fine female Officers/NCO's within the Canadian military.

Deuce The Canadian Forces use the British rank structure and positions. So a Lieutenant or Captain will command a platoon/troop and a major will command a company/squadron/battery. I worked with both 1 PPCLI and 3 RCR in Germany 1981 - 1984....really fine units. I aloways remember how strange it was to have a peer as a captain while I was a weapons platoon leader as a 1LT. Still remember him....Terry Hater. RIP CPT Goddard Smoke WP Do you know if there an online condolence book where one can log in express condolences? Thanks AR

Smoke WP, thanks. I've no doubt that she was capable and qualified. Just didn't know that Canadian cannon-artillery FOOs could include female officers. Hey, AR, you're correct about 1 PPCLI. Worked with them down at Hunter-Liggett in 1988. Really good troops.

My condolences too. UK has had female FOs for many years and they fought in Iraq. I'd have thought that another user of DC power on 777 was the MV radar. Not so sure about keeping a truck always hanging around the gun. Power supply for towed guns became a requirement 30 plus years ago when the first electronic data displays connected to the battery's computer by line or radio appeared. Then came the electronic fuze setters. Rationalising the electronics to reduce the number of boxes and so reduce power consumption is a current focus in some places.
