Subject: Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow

For all you flying aircraft carrier and sky battleship fans, there is a live action/CG movie coming out Sept 17. http://www.skycaptain.com/ It's interesting to see WW2-ish prop planes, including the P-40 Warhawk (Kittyhawk?) fighter as seen in the trailer. It almost wreaks of the anime flick, "Last Exile"..

That is one of the great things about having a 10 year old son....I can use him for camouflage for going to movies like this one!

I'll admit my "sucker gene" for flicks like this also, if anything just to see what the latest CG people can do. Mind you though, the local drive-in (plenty of 'em in PA) is showing AVP and I ROBOT this weekend... might be worth checking out on such a big screen. I looked at the Sky Captain trailer again (download): there is a very "B-24-ish" plane getting into some heat down on the runway. I think I'll see this movie also just to see the blend of "WW2 meets steampunk" tech. Guess I'll just have to use the excuse of hiding behind my INNER child to go see it....

If anyone has ever played the game "Crimson Skies," that's essentially what Sky Captain is going to be. Which is kewl, because Crimson Skies was pretty good. All I know is it has a P-40 in it. P-40s make all movies better--just look at Pearl Harbor. If it wasn't for the dogfight scenes, I would've never bought it.

I've already read the novelization, so I think I'll like the movie. Confession; I'm a 1930's pulp fan, principally Doc Savage and The Shadow. (I thought the Alec Baldwin movie of the latter was pretty much perfect, but the 1975 George Pal version of Doc with Ron Ely gave me a stomachache.) I'm not sure I buy the Warhawk doing a "Flying Sub" number, but Angelina Jolie in skintight leather is always worth a look. And the robots, IMHO, look more like those in the 1941 Fleischer SUPERMAN cartoon, "The Mechanical Monsters", than anything else, so at least they kept them "period". :-).
