Subject: Favorite Military Science Fiction Character

It is great to see the choices for Favorite MSF book. There are so many great titles from which to choose. How about Favorite Military Science Fiction Character? I'd say my personal favorite has become Miles Vorkosigan from Lois McMaster Bujold's Vor Lord series. But my other favorites have to include: (in stream of consciousness order) Andrew Wiggens, Juan Rico, Jack Ryan, Conrad Schwartz, Jonnie Goodboy Tyler, Paul Atriedes, Willard Phule, Sam Damon, Lazarus Long, Johnny Tremain, "The Mule", Honor Harrington, Jack Holloway, Rick Galloway, James Tiberius Kirk, Manual O'Kelly Davis, Nicholas Seafort, "Wiz" Zumwalt, Nathan MacKinnie, Harry Redington, Matthew Brooks Dodson, Horatio Hornblower .... .... others?

Personally, my number one would have to be Colonel Falkenberg, followed closely by Captain Rick Galloway. I always liked Fleet Sergeant Zim better than Juan Rico (maybe cause I was a sergeant who never wanted to be an officer). Prince Lysander has to be tops for political leader who understands the military. How many of our politicians would serve as a very junior officer and give up their full political power just to learn to understand the military? Speaking of military characters and Kimball Kinnison, don't forget Port Admiral Haynes.

>>Only one: The Variag Colonel Anton Vereshagi << First rate pick, without a doubt. To which I'd add a seconding of Mike Golf's promotion of Falkenburg and Prince Lysander from the CoDo series. Sergeant Miscowski gets a nod too, in my opinion. And I'd add Col. George Taylor, 7th United States Cavalry, from Ralph Peters' The War in 2020. The Russian tank commander fighting the delaying action back into the Russian heartland from the same book, whose name I can't recall, also is worth a nod.

Horsesoldier wrote "And I'd add Col. George Taylor, 7th United States Cavalry" Well, I guess so, even if he is a "Gary Owen" rather than a "Black Horse". ;-) How about Lt. Hal Slater from the first Falkenberg book, "West of Honor"? He commanded the detachment that seizes the old CoDo fort upriver to block the escape route of the rebels. John Clark from Tom Clancy's novels. They aren't really sci fi, but Clark (Kelly) is an awesome special operator type, first in the SEALs, then on his own, then for the CIA. And of course who can forget the entire Graeme/Grahame family in Gordon Dickson's Dorsai series, including Cletus, Donal and Ian.

William Mandella in Joe Haldeman's The Forever War. Poor ba$tard is just trying to survive and get home. A greta read. And I concur with COL Taylor. Ever wonder what his face looked like from Runciman's Syndrome? Another thing I like about his book is he shows the impact of CSS on combat ops. Notice how the weapons get less accurate because of lack of boresight? Nothing like a high tech Pie-Watson!

After thinking about this since the thread started I have come to a couple of rather unorthodox choices: the two protectors Phsspok the Pak and the Brennan-Monster from Larry Niven's Known Space series. Admittedly they weren't traditional military heroes: Brennan being conscripted by biology and Phsspok ( or however you spell the name) having an armed rescue role. However, both were technically human and extraordinarily dedicated fighters for their cause. Phsspok spending millenia on a rescue mission and Brennan spending centuries as the lone defender of the human race. I could go on but I'm sure that many people haven't read the book "Protector" and I wouldn't want to spoil the story. Regards

If i was picking someone to serve under it would be Falkenburgh or Honour Harrington. They might get me killed but it wouldn't be for nothing. if i had to serve under James T Kirk i think i would desert or shoot myself rather than wait to be killed by his happy band of idiots. The command crew seem to survive but my god the bone headed stuff the lesser lights pulled.

I have several. If I were setting up an inter- stellar EF, this would be my preferred command staff; Task Group CO; Adm. Honor Harrington Ground Force CO; Col. Alois Hammer CAG: RADM. "Robby" Jackson SpecOps CO; Capt. Armand Pahner G2; Adm. Dominic Flandry Getting The B*****ds To Sign The Peace Treaty After It Was Over; Jame Retief (You always need a good diplomat in these situations.)..

I can't believe you chose Hammer over Falkenberg for the ground force CO!!! I'm horribly shocked. :-)

Hammer is a tanker, Falkenburg is infantry. I'm assuming that the Threat force would have armor. Also, Falkenburg mainly dealt with what I would call "internal security" problems (of course, I haven't read all of Pournelle's stories about him -yet; they're on my reading list). Hammer, while "technically" a mercenary (like JCF) was more often involved in full-on campaigns vs. full- grown armies- again, I'm assuming a worst-case scenario for the Threat force. Would you settle for my adding him as Co of the Mech Inf?.
