For those military SF readers Try Rick Shelly Spec Ops, The Regiment, by Dalmas and the Honor Harrington series by David Weber. If you like well developed plots and characters all of these are really good reads.

For my money, Forbidden Planet remains the all-time classic. This book and the film still stands tall after 48 years. Electric fences with point defense blasters for the landing site! trash cans with built-in disintegrators. Cigarettes that light with a pull-tab instead of a match. Best of all the humans are the invaders, and in a flying saucer! And when they land the other humans don't want them around! And all the time the enemy is everywhere, within each of them. What an intelligent approach to sci-fi instead of all the other crap Hollywood was shucking. Best of all, MGM tried to buy a rocket from the army to launch their own satellite to promote the film--before Sputnik. Ah what might have been.
