Subject: Ice Age Cometh - The End of Modern Man.

Blame Herald for this thread since he gave me the idea by mentioning the Topa Supervolcano on another thread. Beginning today a super-volcanic erruption blows up to 2800 cubic kilometers of volcanic ash and rock into the morning sky. Temperatures drop 8 degrees c. in a matter of days and remain 5-10 degrees c. lower than average for the next couple of years. The Gulf Stream collapses and an mini ice age sweeps Western Europe, Eastern Europe, and Russia. Do we cooperate to survive? Do we kill each other over diminishing resources? What happens politically and militarily? Remember it has happened before and by definition it will happen again. Wonder which show that was.  The one I saw said it would be pyroclastic flows and ash fall.

No big bang.

The real question is how long and how far does the earth cool in the aftermath.  According to the theories, if the average extent of the resulting glaciers (i.e. year round ice) extends past the 45° latitude then they will not stop growing until they meet at the equator.

This is just the kind of thinking, or more exactly failure to think that drives me mad! Would you lay down and die if Yellowstone exploded tomorrow? Niether would I! Don't you think that with all of our resources in this country, we could handle 2 meters of ash spread over the mid west over the next two to twenty or maby fifty years? What if it only took the eruption one week to lay all that ash down? Then it would cease to be trouble a month later. But in reality, it might take 100 years? That is two centimeters per year! 600,000 years ago yellow stown dropped 2M of ash on the mid west. It did cause all of the things you mention, but then we were not around to fix it!

It would all depend on the rate of deposition. Slow and we can handel it with conventional earth moving equipment. Go look at sat pics of the Bingham copper mine if you doubt this! If it is on the other hand quick, then unconventional methods will work even better! read the "Farmers Nuclear Survival Guide" From the '50s? All in all, this sort of senario is a great deal easier to deal with than you think!

I would take a nuclear war over this thing any day!

In fact the sources on Toba show it is a classic pyroclastic event. One big series of blasts that would cover a period of days to weeks. At its conclusion would be an ice age. Much of the bio-mass on the planet would die of shock because of lack of sun light and adverse weather related to the events. When this happened 75,000 years ago people may have been reduced to about  1,000 mating pairs. No, I wouldn't lay down and die but there would be a serious challenge to Mexico's imigration policies! Modern Europe would cease to exsist right along with North America and agriculture would grind to a halt world wide. All of this shows that Mother nature has a way of cleaning the slate on a fairly regular basis (in terms of geologic time).

If this event happened anywhere on the planet it would be the defining event of man's existence to date. How we might deal with it is something to be considered because as I said: It has happened before and it will happen again.
