Subject: Calling all geeks!

Following a post on MSF book series, I'd just like to see if anyone else here has ever played the Battletech board wargame? If so, what are your favourite factions and mechs? I like the FedCom and Clan Ghost Bear, and my favourite 'mechs are GRF-1N Griffin (sentimental value), MAD-5S Marauder (the one with the Gauss) and Vulture ('cos its well shooty).

I never got a chance to play the actualy game, but i did have most of the tech manuels and designed mechs as a hobby for a while. As for my favorite Mechs I guess ol-style would be the Archer, IS the Devestator, and as for the Clans hard to beat the Mad Cat

I had the game set for some time, but never got the chance to play. I believe that the rules may have been just a bit more complex than necessary. FASA has been making a killing on the novels and the video games though.

Devastator is a mean piece of Battletechnology, gotta love the heat efficient Gauss/PPC combo. Mad Cat is also nasty, they tear right through you if playing Clan invasion scenarios with old-school IS mechs. As they say, imitation is the sicerest form of flattery, so both the Mad Cat and Vulture score highly with the development of the Rakshasa and Avatar.

I haven't played the game, though i too have read the tech manuals and the novels. I gotta go with the King Crab, Masakari and the Mad Cat. I like the Ghost Bears and the Draconis Combine.

I've never seen Battletech, but a superb gearhead RPG supplement was Fire, Fusion and Steel for the Traveller universe. Realistic weapon and vehicle design rules. Regards

Oh, HELL yes! I've been playing Classic Battletech since 1989. The rules are actually pretty simple; if you can add or subtract, you can play. FASA went out of business some years ago, but WizKids picked up the license, and CBT is still going strong, alongside the simpler (and more expensive) click-tech MechWarrior Dark Ages. Those of you who never played but had the stuff should get back into it. My faves tend to be the Wolfhound, Griffin, Archer, and Battlemaster. For the Clans, Black Hawks, Mad Cats, and Nova Cats.

the original design rules in striker were considerably better than FFS was. a buddy and i designed more than 70 ww2 through modern vehicles using the striker rules and they performed extremely well at allowing you to replicate existing vehicles. our only major discrepancy was that our bradleys floated while the real thing well doesn't.
