Al righty, this is the first time I will start a post on this board, so through me a bone. what do you folks think about it from an military P.O.V. A more realistic view. I would say that in realism, the World would be inslaved by the snake heads because I don't buy the Idea that you could go from one dimension to another. so in other words only 1 season would exsists, unless those lovable Asgard come in and save the day. I hope that there are people that know what I am talking about if you care here are two sites to visit for some info. Just have educational fun with this. / stargate-sg1-solutions.com "To the Escape Pod! I REGRET NOTHING!!"

The show is totally unrealistic in almost every way. And, yet, it's good space opera and one of the least stupid American science fiction series ever made. Very well cast and rarely goes wrong when it shows a sense of humor about itself.

-a little late, but........... I dont like mcgiver... I do not like much sci-fi-most is beyond stupid. There are a few exceptions-star trek being one of the exeptions-I love seeing the origional old episodes...how corny and fake-that is the alure...the modern ones are a slightly better soap opera. I liked enterprise and I like scott bakula-to bad it ended. with that said..... I would not watch sg as it had mcgiver......and it was strongly military based and I cant stand shows that take that stance and are so far off of reality... However.....I watched a few from 2002(the actual yr) and ever since, I love the series. 10 yrs and counting-the longest running sci fi series, and atlantis is growing on me For both, they have good actors and somewhat good scripts and story lines. It cant all be perfect, but they are among the best sci-fi shows. The mannerisms, nuiances, facial expressions, etc... are dead on. Great voice inflections, etc.....that is why the show works. as far as realism: its sci fi, what do you expect. But the important thing is, they mix in as much fact as possible. Thats a deal maker. As the episodes went on, they acting and writing got better and better. example: season 1: episode 1-3-childern of the god. For the realism part; when Apfous comes through the gate with the Jaffa, the corny sceen: the guards take the rifles and fire from the hip. same thing I would expect from a low budget flick. and the acting/warcrys, yelling, etc...Then general hammond comes in and stops them from firing so they would not hit the ditz airman who 'wandered' up the ramp and "ohhh, what is this pretty ball?" why did they not shoot him in the head? season over. They were 15 ft away and had a clear head shot. I HATE THAT CRAP.. But then you wouldnt have most of season 1. As I said, it got better........now to your point mex..........I think it is moderately possible. Remember, most scientist dismiss something if their fragile egos cant expalin it. Thusly, it cant be true. Who knows in 10-50 yrs? Some scientist do believe in alternate realities, so who knows.... and the way the set the story up, they make it plausible to watch and enjoy.... military? well, that is a kicker for me in any advertized-as-serious.... They do a decent job, but as they stretch for stories, they also stretch the rules....perhaps it might happen in real life-in those situations, but I dont know I dont like senator kensey...(I like the actor, not the character) I dont think Jack would be around long with all his mouth.....that part is unrealistic. The other part, they do a decent job of tatic modifications, but again, per story, stupid stuff gets over looked as they need more episodes. I never saw the ground threat of the Jaffa. Other than the threat from space, all they mimic are the banzi japense. They had shields, but could not field many thousands of troops as motherships were limmited. In a ground battle, they would banzi themselves to death. In addition, I have never saw a ground vehicle. I dont think their cannon(even the mounted) would stand up to a tank. what would they do? perhaps some L-Cash(sp) would provide fire support, but they had only limmited numbers, and were vunerible to anti-air. Our anti-air could easily(in the thousands of aircraft and helicopters) wipe out any ground forces. we could easily adapt, ring up a nuke or to and totally defeat them, or ring up and take a ship as the 4 member quite often did as the gould had little commen sense in ship security. but then again, they could just flatten the planet from orbit. That is the only way the snakes could win. I give it an A for quality over the past 10 yrs. It is not always great, but it is almost always good It is a show and it can not be 100% accurate, it is one of the more accurate shows......

I do think that they need to show more of the Snak's tech(or make more) After season 6(With the intro to the 303) is when the goauld lost thier scare. Though if Anubis' fleet was fast enough to stop the Ancient Weapon from biegn used, what you think? This is what I would think "To the Alpha Site! I REGREAT NOTHING!! PS KILL THAT SENATOR BEFORE I LEAVE!!!!!!!"

For those of us keeping track, VP Kinsey was fired by President Hayes in episode whatever (8th season, IIRC), eventually became possessed by a cloned Goa'uld larva, and was blown out of space when his Al-Kesh came under attack from the Prometheus just before jumping to hyperspace.

as for goa'uld military potential lets see. they have those bug ugly big mother ships which can fire from orbit against ground targets. in one episode (alternate timeline) we are told they blew open stargate command at the bottom of cheyenne mtn. we are also told they invaded and pretty much summarily crushed earth's defense forces at that time. still back to what's been observed. mother ships able to provide ground support while totally impervious to return fire. advanced ew capabilities, ground troops who can be inserted as needed in whatever numbers seem needed, ground troops who are rather bullet resistant and who heal unnaturally fast should they survive the attack that laid them out. ground troops who are on the average much older and better trained than ours albeit in a different style of warfare. i'd bet on us winning a lot of skirmishes especially at the start but i don't think there would be any real doubt of the outcome of the war given the enemies ability to detect and vapourize any troop concentrations or logistics points of any note.

Lol, question? Do u guys reckon a BTR-80/90 or Stryker or LAV type vehicle would fit through the gate? Seriously, I reckon that they should have sent wheeled vehilces through from the very beginning. Militarily, it makes perfect sense. Much greater mobility, sensors, and communications capability (i.e. ideal for the role of planetary exploration), and much greater firepower. A quick recon by a couple of BTR/Stryker/LAV mounted sections would yield far more data, be far more useful in keeping natives in check if necessary, and would provide fantastic lethality against Jaffa. This would have been far more pronounced if vehicles had been used from the start. That massed jaffa charge at the end of Children of the Gods would have been a snack for a couple of automatic grenade launchers/auto-cannon/HMGs/co-ax MGs. Gliders would be a problem, but keep a couple of Stinger launchers in the vehicles handy for self defence. If too much trouble is encountered you conduct a hasty retreat. I'd really like to see Jaffa overtake a speeding Stryker, especially when it's lobbing 40mm grenades in your lap! You don't send the SG teams to overwhelm Jaffa battle-groups, you send them on planetary exploration missions, but if mounted in APCs/IFVs they would have fantastically greater flexibilty. And personally, I reckon a lighter MBT (i.e. T-80/90) would fit through the middle of the gate. If I were Hammond, I would persuade the Pentagon to procure a few companies worth of T-80U tanks, kit them out with US-thermals and Ainet fusing systems of the T-80UK/T-90 and keep them handy as a heavy weapons reserve for SG teams in trouble. The only trouble would be getting them through the gate but it could be done by erecting a two-piece ramp on the other side of the worm-hole and folding the radio antenna down. Combined actions by an IFV platoon reinforced by a tank platoon could take on regular Jaffa infantry out of all proportion to their numbers. The air-burst fuze of the tank guns would be devastating, especially as Jaffa are severly hindered in their mobility by their armour. The long-range fires would be worth their weight in gold, and the thermal sights and comms on the vehicles would be priceless assets. By chosing a motorized SG programme, the SGC could explore much more of the planets, and fight when it chooses to.

That was what I had in mind since I saw the Movie, before I saw the tvseries. How maney Apache's do you think the Odessy can hold? A few strikers A few Apaches F-302's the odessy and a couple of SGteams will give any Jaffa Regulars a run for their money. That Said I now know what every Gouald and Jaffa and Tok'ra ment by "The People of the Tur'ie(sp?) have come a long way" "To the Escape Pod! I REGRET NOTHING!!"
