Subject: Clone Troopers and Stormtroopers
TriggaFingaz    2/12/2006 7:46:46 AM
Which ones do you prefer: The Clone Troopers of the Galactic Republic (Star Wars Episode II & III) or the Imperial Stormtroopers of the classic Star Wars trilogy? For one, I like the episode III clones the best because of sheer variety- the commanders have names, while different units colour their armour to distinguish themselves! Also, they are clones of Boba Fett's father, Jango! While Stormtroopers are also cool, they are BLAND- all white, even in places where they would stand out like a tarantula on wedding cake... at least the clone troops who were serving with Yoda on Chewie's homeworld had camouflage!!! What are your views?

And please add your favourite clone commanders from Revenge of the Sith too, for discussion's sake.

Clearly vastly superior to the pathetic clone-troopers of the travesty of Episodes 1 to 3. They have better-looking weapons, better support equipment and don't feel the need to display important persons to the enemy by means of bright colors. Plus they've spawned "Troops" and "I.M.P.S."

As I understand it (going back to the "Star Wars Poster Magazines" I have in my collection from three decades ago) Imperial troops were >always< supposed to have been clones. We now know they were (are?) apparently all clones of one "original", namely Jango Fett. (This has obvious advantages in uniform issue, as one size really >does< fit all.) As for the differences in ordnance, I think you could argue (conceptually) that under the 20-odd years of ham-fisted Imperial rule, they lost enough of their high-technology base and industries to necessitate finding "low-tech" or "make-do" replacements for the ultra-tech hardware they no longer had a support matrix for. Hence "Imperial Walkers" instead of contragrav gunships, and troop carriers, etc. The overall posture of the later Imperial forces was heavily biased in favor of internal policing, not only for practical reasons but also for purely financial ones. After all, they were probably spending a respectable chunk of the Galaxy's GDP on all of Lord Vader & Co.'s toys, like the Imperator- to say nothing of how much those two Death Stars must have cost. Cheers. eon

TriggaFingaz    Clones and originals   2/15/2006 1:52:25 PM
Well, I always thought that the origins of the stormtroopers were meant to be mysterious and open to speculation. I don't know if G-Lucas intended the stormies to be clones when he wrote the script for Episode IV (1977). That's why they have different heights and voices. If Lucas intended Imperial stormies to be clones, they'd have gotten actors of all the same height AND given them the same voice. Of course, they won't have Temuera Morrison to do the voice since he was probably still a child in 1977-1983! Also, with respect to using the same voice acting for all stormies (if they were meant to be clones), they'd have to use the original voice actor from the classic trilogy for Jango, the clones and never show his face! Unless they dubbed over whoever was cast for Jango. My standpoint (to concile real world vs 'within the universe' explanations is that while the Kaminoans used the Jango Fett template to create the original clones for the Republic's war against the droid armies, following the end of the clone wars, other men were used as clone templates for some stormies while conscripts were also used.

Even if some stormtroopers were clones, well, the Imp troops who are not stormies (the black clad naval troops and officers) were of course regular people! Yeah, it's problematic that the clone NCOs and officers could be picked off due to their markings... but it's also must be madness for identically clad stormies to identify their own leaders!

I remember back in the 1980's the roleplaying guide books said the regular Imperial Army looked more or less like star destroyer / death star guards , being that they had helmets and uniform. The guides said that the "stormtroopers" were a speacial unit of the Imperial Army that served Vader in the hunt of the Jedi and Rebellion. Years later all those references can not be found and it is mentioned that the stormtrooper is not just a speacil division, but is the actual imperial army. The story was also changed so that the divison assissting Vader is the 501st Legion or known through the galaxy as "Vader's Fist". "Phanton Menace" now changed it up making all the troopers clones. But it must be noted that in episode IV New Hope that Obi Wan makes a reference to the Clone Wars.

Republic Commandos as featured in the Game of the same name, and the book Hard Contact are clearly the hardest of the bunch. Basically SAS/Delta Force of the clone wars

"Yeah, it's problematic that the clone NCOs and officers could be picked off due to their markings... but it's also must be madness for identically clad stormies to identify their own leaders!" They definately have a helmet HUD/landwarrior setup in their helmets. How else do they shoot from the hip with such accuracy. There's no need to have uniform markings.

"They definately have a helmet HUD/landwarrior setup in their helmets. How else do they shoot from the hip with such accuracy. There's no need to have uniform markings." Umm, what accuracy? Oh, I guess maybe when dealing with mooks, but shooting at Luke, Han or company, they couldn't hit the broad side of a barn if they were inside with the door shut. buzzard
