Subject: Help! Military Satellites
DCnitro    11/7/2005 7:40:25 PM
Need some help folks. I'm a screenwriter in Los Angeles, California doing research on military satellites for a film project. I need help understanding the WORST CASE SCENARIO dangers if a terrorist or hostile group got the location and the ability to control our military satellites. In this present day and age, would it still be detrimental to our national security and how? Thanks!

wasnt this kind of thing done before in James bond007-Goldeneye and Steven segal in Undersiege 2 ??? Most of the time these satelittes are too complicated for terrorists to access, they have to already be americans who turn traitor etc. In james bond film , tommorrow never dies, they have terrorist arms market at the beggining of the film where they sell an american sattelite encoder thingy. Personnally i think atellites out of control is already a well done thing. But the encoder in the hands of a bad man is something to go on i guess. Why dont u do a film on terrorists in US army infiltrate and turn on thier own troops kind of thing. In some kind of war scenario. Now that would be interesting, it would be brutal, but you would have enough meanacce to entertain and material to go on in it. it would have that, bad man/traitor versus the good guys kind of thing, always a good film jibe. I would go to see that anyday, it would be something kind of new. If only i could get paid for my ideas ...

It would require a massive effort by many skilled experts and techs. The usual casting central terrorists, the brilliant villian and the handfull of two dimensional underlings working out of a secret lab could not do it. Place your bad guys in some oil rich country where a large technial effort could have at least a small degree of cover and the plot migth be beliveable. They'd also need the communications codes and the operating program & its codes for whatever they are hijacking. A traitor selling them this is beliveable. To get around active safeguards you might have them hijack deactivated satilite/s that are not being moinitored closely. And rather than US satilites have them go after old Soviet hardware that is watched even less well.

CHECK IT OUT THERE ARE 29 satellites REVOLVING AROUND THE WORLD 2 TIMES A DAY.LETS SAY A SOLDIER WAS USING A GPS .IF terrorist CONTROLED OUR satellites THEY COULD JAMM OUR SIGNALS,SPOOFE OUR GPS WHICH MEANS THEY CAN SEND US INTO TRAP,OR WE COULD HURT OUR OWN.AND THEY CAN ALSO LOCATE US AND KILL US WERE WE STAND AND WE WONT EVEN KNOW IT

The primary problem with terrs accessing our MILSAT system isn't realtime intel for them, it's the fact that they could deny it to us. Consider that with superuser control (equivalent to STRACOM priority authority) it would be possible to cut us out of the command loop for, say, any of our recon satellites. In plain English, we want to look at a terr training base in Iran or Syria, but when we send the commands to the satellite to fire its ACS or maneuver engines to reorient or do a vector change for overheads, it rejects the commands- while they are busy at said base(s) readying WMDs for a strike on us. (In fact, such a "non-event" from a reconsat >might< be our first notification of something quite staggeringly nasty in the offing.) There are sufficient interlocks in the system that most "cinematic" bad events (the satellite gives the Threat force a look at our installations, or the terrs deorbit it to do a kinetic strike on, say, the White House) can't happen in reality. But denial of command response resulting in a "mission kill" is a very real possibility. Cheers (or maybe not, in this case....) eon

Worse, if the GPS satellite system could be subverted or jammed, all those wonderful GPS munitions revert to being iron bombs.
