Haven't seen it, but according to Rotten Tomatoes (the film buff website), it's a big-budget remake of a low-budget movie, "Parts; The Clonus Horror", from 1978. This reprehensible piece of crap is on Mondo DVD, and has to be seen to be believed- once. Michael Bay's track record took another hit with this one, as if he needed any more bad press after "Pearl Harbor". As it is, he's about one notch above "box-office poison" status with the majors right now, especially because Dreamworks is eating the costs of this one on top of the fizzle of "War Of The Worlds " that they co-produced with Paramount. As for the star, Ewen McGregor apparently is hoping this one won't show up on his resume' in future. The female lead (whose name escapes me at the moment) has apparently stopped doing interviews about the film. This has all the earmarks of another "Waterworld". And it can be laid principally at the door of the director. (It was a "pet project" of his from the word "go".) The sad part is, it's possible to tell a good story about this subject- it's called "The Long ARM of Gil Hamilton", by Larry Niven. The property has been kicking around Tinseltown for years- apparently without any takers that Niven can live with. (He probably made note of how Hollyweird has mangled Tom Clancy's novels.) I'd consider Niven's stories first-class prospects for the "Blade Runner" treatment, by a good director, like Ridley Scott or (especially )John Woo. Michael Bay, unfortunately, isn't a good director. And "The Island" apparently shows it.

Thank you eon. its a shame I have been looking forward to this one. I will still go to see it. only difference is my expectations are low.

the fundamental "truth" of the movie is badly flawed in that it looks like it's going to be easier to grow organs rather than people to remove organs from. get's you away from the messy moral aspects entirely.

Just one more example of how little "science" (or even logic) there is in any Hollywood "science fiction" movie these days. (I >still< haven't forgiven the Wachowski brothers- or Keanu Reeves- for the "Matrix" movies. I give Carrie-Ann Moss a pass, though.) Whatever happened to movies that at least were halfway believable, like say, "Destination Moon", "Forbidden Planet", or even "This Island Earth"? (All three of which qualify as MSF, IMHO.)

It looks like I'm not the only one who noticed the resemblance between "The Island" and "Clonus". http://www.scifi.com/sfw/issue434/news.html The producers of "Clonus"- and their lawyers- noticed it too.

I saw it a few hours ago with the long-suffering wife. It's probably worth seeing the theater if you're not a film student and just want to be entertained for two hours. It does suffer rather badly from a point made in a previous post- there's no need to grow entire bodies when the technologoy to selectively grow new organs is in development as we speak. That, and gratuitious "future technology"; we're expected to believe maglev trains will be commonplace in 2020, for instance. Getting back to what this forum is supposed to be covering, the military professionals who show up in the film don't pack much in the way of futuristic kit, though, which is a point in the movie's favor.
