Subject: Whatever Happened To The New Voyage To the Bottom Of The Sea Movie?
eon    5/5/2005 9:43:01 AM
As an old Irwin Allen fan, I was sort of excited (or as much so as I ever get, at least) to hear that following the (sort of) success of the "Lost In Space" movie, Fox was planning a new film version of my favorite Allen show, "Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea" (1964-68), that started out in 1961 as a theatrical film to begin with. But it seems to have evaporated faster than a deep-sea jellyfish brought up in a dredge. Anybody know what happened? And did they ever get as far as artist's concept of a new version of the Seaview?

They couldn't find enough zippers for the monster suits. In the TV series, the monsters always had a very large and very aparent zipper usually up the back. The movie set the sky one fire, no zipper needed there.

Sci-Fi Weekly reported that the plot involved the Seaview encountering a giant colony of something on the sea floor. Sounds kind of like the "Blob" remake in some ways, doesn't it?

In the original movie, didn't Walter Pidgeon play Admiral Nelson....and didn't the Van Allen Radiation Belt catch on fire? And the Sea View had to get to a specific spot to fire a nuke to put out the fire? That show always reminds of a cold snowy night in Buffalo, NY as a ten year old on Friday Night Creature Feature in 1967! And the Flying Sub was the best....anybody remember the pilots name? ITrivia Question!)

Correct on all counts, AR. And the FS-1 was normally flown by Admiral Nelson himself, usually with Capt. Crane riding right seat. The actual rated pilot was Seaman 1/c Kowalski, played by Del Monroe, who also appeared (as "Kowski") in the feature film. (Yes, I am a nerd on this show.)

Regarding, FS-1 Trivia - Admiral Nelson did pilot the FS1, but Captain Crane also did. Most of the time, Nelson had someone else with him, like one of the ratings, Chief Sharkey, or, most of the time, a passenger. When Captain Crane flew her, most often it was solo or with Kowalski or the Chief. Lt. Cdr. Chip Morton, Sharkey, Kowalski and Riley also flew her, so one has to believe in Irwin's world, they were all qualified pilots for the small craft.

Eon, Actually, the report was that they would recover an item from the seafloor, and it would be hiding an alien life form. It is reminiscent of the episode 'Monster from Outer Space' a second season episode. The word that is circulating in the fandom is that they original writer has been replaced by one who is more in 'communion' with the series and the original idea for the show

Thanks for the info. That would be a definite improvement over, say, the way they did the "Lost In Space" movie. Any word on casting? I've always sort of visualized Tommy Lee Jones as Adm. Nelson, and (maybe) George Clooney As Capt. Crane. Also (don't laugh- OK, you can if you want to) Denzel Washington as Cmdr. Morton (although he might feel that after "Crimson Tide" he'd already done his share of undersea epics.......)

I've been hearing that Voyage will be remade but I never trusted it. I hope if it is, it doesn't flop like most undersea movies in the last 20-something years have. In the meantime, I just keep hearing about it.
