Oops, correction: Point being that we upgrade less often...preferring one major upgrade rather than a series of incremental ones. Not much of a choice when you consider how many we make at once.

One Sidewinder even had a Nuke for a warhead I think that would be top missile it only has to get within about half a mile of a enemy plane to take it out. :]

Most people seem to rate the archer as better. does the aim 9x have thrust vectoring?

I'm fairly certain it would be IMPOSSIBLE to convince YOU otherwise. It's more directed toward the guy who asked the question. Honestly, even if the AIM-9X had no statistical info out yet, I'd assume it to be better b/c: A)It's newer, thus more "likely" to be better. B)It cost more to develop, again, making it more "likely" to be better. But the more important reasons: C)Odds are we got plenty of foreign cooperation on the project. For example, British aid since they have ASRAAM. The Izzies owe us a few, and they've got Python. The French sell to anybody willing to pay, so you've got Magic. The Yak-141's Russians have already assisted us on the VTOL JSF, so it's not too unlikely we'd buy some help on the AIM-9X as well. With higher off-boresight angle and near BVR range, it's general characteristics would tend to make it a better dogfight missile.

"With higher off-boresight angle and near BVR range, it's general characteristics would tend to make it a better dogfight missile." The R-73 is longer ranging, carries a more powerful warhead, and the off-boresight capability is equal. I don't get it, why is the AIM-9X better? p.s. I'm not saying the 'winder isn't capable, it's just not the be all and end all of the dog-fight missiles.
